About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler maintains his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings for the second week, also leading National League pitchers.

Meanwhile, Riley Greene of the Tigers rises to first place among American League batters and Christian Yelich of the Brewers rises to first place among NL batters this week. Bryan Woo of the Mariners maintains his first place spot this week among AL pitchers.

Wheeler leads

Wheeler has 9.1 Box-Toppers points in 2025, picking up 1.7 points in the past week, maintaining first place overall for the second week. He leads ahead of second-place player, Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo (8.0 points).

Wheeler also leads among NL pitchers ahead of second-place Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers (8.0 points).

Wheeler led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2024 with 21.4.

American League batters

Riley Greene of the Tigers rises from fourth place last week to first place this week with 6.5 Box-Toppers points, passing Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox (5.0 points), who led for the past two weeks and who now falls to second place.

Greene ranks seventh among all players and is the only batter currently in the season player rankings top 10 list.

National League batters

Christian Yelich of the Brewers rises from third place last week to first place this week with 5.7 Box-Toppers points, passing Pete Alonso of the Mets (5.5 points), who led for the past five weeks and who now falls to second place.

Yelich ranks 15th among all players.

American League pitchers

Bryan Woo of the Mariners leads for the second week with 8.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads ahead of second-place Carlos Rodón of the Yankees (6.7 points).

Woo also holds steady from last week in second place in overall rankings.

Box-Toppers almanac

Batters fared well above average this week compared to the rest of the year, winning Player of the Game honors in 44 of the 93 games played (47.3 percent) with pitchers winning in 49 (52.7 percent).

Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season increased from 37.9 percent last week to 39.1 percent this week. Batters have won in 292 of the 747 total games played in 2025, with pitchers winning in 455.

Batters also had an increase in their share of Box-Toppers points earned this season from 38.0 percent last week to 39.1 percent this week (348.3 points out of 891.9 total awarded). Pitchers have won 60.9 percent of all points.

Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
