Player of the Day

Wheeler struck out eight over 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks, in the 4-3 win over the Athletics.

Wheeler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.1 for the season, extending his lead in season player rankings over second-place player, Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo (8.0 points). Wheeler also leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers (8.0 points).

Wheeler becomes the first player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2025. (In 2024, 59 players reached 10 points.) It is his sixth season with 10 or more points. His best season was 2024 with the Phillies when he had 21.4 points to lead all players. He is ahead of his 2024 pace—he reached 10 points last season on June 22, when he was the sixth player in 2024 to reach 10 points.

Wheeler also has 116.1 career Box-Toppers points, 59th-most among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 2.0 points Friday, he passes five players on the “all-time” career points list—Yankees pitcher Carlos Carrasco (114.2), Ervin Santana (114.4), Josh Beckett (114.9), Tim Lincecum (115.0) and Torii Hunter (115.9). He now trails 58th-ranked player, Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray (116.3).

Wheeler ranks 10th among active players in career points, seventh among active NL pitchers.

American League Player of the Day is Rafael Devers of the Red Sox.

American League Player of the Day

Rafael Devers of the Red Sox hit two home runs, including a grand slam and a three-run homer, in the 19-5 win over the Orioles. Devers went 4-for-6, scoring three times and driving in eight runs.

Devers earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 3.7 for the season, fifth among AL batters.

Devers Friday recorded the third-highest ranking Box-Toppers game score for a batter earning Player of the Game honors in 2025 (+9.0). The top two:

  • +11.0 by Brandon Nimmo of the Mets on April 28 (2HR 2B 4-6 4R 9BI in the 19-5 win over the Nationals).

  • +10.0 by Aaron Judge of the Yankees on March 29 (3HR 2B 4-6 4R 8BI in the 20-9 win over the Brewers).

Nimmo and Judge both won overall Player of the Day honors in those games, while Devers earned AL Player of the Day Friday—his 9.0 game score trailed the +9.2 game score by Player of the Day Zack Wheeler.

National League Batter of the Day is Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs.

National League Batter of the Day

Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in the 13-6 win over the Reds. Crow-Armstrong also doubled and went 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in six runs.

Crow-Armstrong earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 6.5 for the season, rising to ninth place overall and first among NL batters, passing previous leader Christian Yelich of the Brewers (5.7 points), who only took the lead Thursday and now falls to second place.

Crow-Armstrong joins Riley Greene of the Tigers as the only batters currently among Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10. Though they both have 6.5 points in 2025, Greene ranks higher—eighth overall—because he has more 2024 Box-Toppers points—5.2 vs. 1.0.

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Rafael Devers.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
