A Box-Toppers look back at regular season series between Blue Jays, Dodgers

Mookie Betts of the Dodgers was Box-Toppers Player of the Game in the Aug. 8 win over the Blue Jays.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays, meeting in the World Series beginning Friday, also met during the regular season for three games in Los Angeles, with the Dodgers winning two of the three games:

  • On Aug. 8, the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays, 5-1.

  • On Aug. 9, the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays, 9-1.

  • On Aug. 10, the Blue Jays beat the Dodgers, 5-4.

Here is a look at Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners in each of those games:

Aug. 8—Dodgers 5, Blue Jays 1

Player of the Game—Mookie Betts, Dodgers

Betts homered and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs.

Betts earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game with a +3.0 Box-Toppers game score.

The game featured a pitching matchup of the two players with the most career Box-Toppers points among active players—Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers and Max Scherzer of the Blue Jays. At the time, Kershaw led active players with 276.1 career points while Scherzer ranked second with 256.7. (At season’s end, Kershaw led active players with 280.8 points vs. the same 256.7 for Scherzer.)

Though Kershaw picked up the win, he did not earn Player of the Game honors with a 0.0 game score (6IP 7H R BB 4K W). Scherzer had a -2.0 game score in the loss  (6IP 6H 2R 3BB 5K L).

Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell was Box-Toppers Player of the Game in the Aug. 9 win over the Blue Jays.

Aug. 9—Dodgers 9, Blue Jays 1

Player of the Game—Blake Snell, Dodgers

Snell struck out 10 over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks, earning overall Player of the Day honors.

Snell earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game and a bonus 1.0 point as overall Player of the Day, They were his first points of the season as he had missed about four months with left shoulder inflammation. He finished the season with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, 36th among NL pitchers.

Snell recorded a +9.0 Box-Toppers game score to lead the day’s 16 Player of the Game winners

Blue Jays pitcher Mason Fluharty was Box-Toppers Player of the Game in the Aug. 10 win over the Dodgers.

Aug. 10—Blue Jays 5, Dodgers 4

Player of the Game—Mason Fluharty, Blue Jays

Fluharty struck out one over 2/3 of an inning, allowing no runs, hits or walks, and picking up the save.

Fluharty earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game, giving him 2.0 for the season, his final total for the season.

Fluharty recorded a +1.2 Box-Toppers game score, lowest among the day’s 15 Player of the Game winners.

All three of the Player of the Game winners from the regular season are slated to be active in the best-of-seven-game World Series between the two teams which begins Friday.
