Also, Yankees pitcher Luis Gil maintains fifth place in season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day
Schwarber hit three home runs, including a three-run shot, and doubled, in the 9-4 win over the Dodgers. Schwarber went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in seven runs.
Schwarber earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.5 for the season, 100th among all players and 11th among National League batters.
Schwarber recorded a +10.0 Box-Toppers game score Wednesday, best for all batters winning Player of the Game honors in 2024. Previously, Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox had the highest such score, recorded April 27 (HR 2-2B SF 4-4 3R 7BI in the 17-0 win over the Cubs). While Rafaela also recorded a +10.0 game score, Schwarber’s ranks higher because he hit more home runs—three vs. one.
And while Schwarber won overall Player of the Day honors with his +10.0 game score, Rafaela only earned AL Batter of the Day honors on April 27 with his +10.0 game score, which was that day’s fifth-highest.
While Schwarber’s +10.0 game score is the highest for a batter earning Player of the Game honors in 2024, it is the 129th-highest for all players earning Player of the Game honors this season, behind 128 pitchers.
This is just the fourth time this season that a batter has won overall Player of the Day honors. On the other 129 days of the season, pitchers have won overall Player of the Day honors. This is the first time this season that a batter has won overall Player of the Day honors on a day in which a full schedule of 15 or more games were completed (17 were completed Wednesday).
Here are the other three times this season that a batter won overall Player of the Day honors:
March 21—Jake Cronenworth of the Padres was Player of the Day with a +6.0 Box-Toppers game score. It was the only game of the day, the second game of the 2024 season, played in South Korea.
June 20—Ryan Mountcastle of the Orioles was Player of the Day with a +4.0 Box-Toppers game score. Nine games were played that day.
Aug. 1—Jose Ramirez of the Guardians was Player of the Day with a +4.0 Box-Toppers game score. Five games were played that day.
In 2023, batters won overall Player of the Day honors 12 times in 183 days of the regular season.
American League Player of the Day
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal struck out nine over seven innings, allowing two runs, three hits and two walks, in the 6-2 win over the Mariners.
Skubal earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 16.1 for the season, rising from fourth to second place in season player rankings, behind overall leader, Padres pitcher Dylan Cease (17.4 points). Skubal also extends his lead among AL pitchers, ahead of second-place Luis Gil of the Yankees (15.4 points), who also earned Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
American League Batter of the Day
Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals hit two home runs, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 8-4 win over the Red Sox.
Witt earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 8.9 for the season, 35th among all players and third among AL batters, behind Aaron Judge of the Yankees (11.0) and Juan Soto of the Yankees (9.5).
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall Player of the Day is NL batter Kyle Schwarber.
Rankings
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil maintains fifth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
Gil (5IP 2H 0R 5BB 6K W in the 5-2 win over the Angels) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 15.4 for the season. He also maintains his second-place ranking among AL pitchers, behind Tarik Skubal of the Tigers (16.1 points), who was Wednesday’s AL Player of the Day.
Notable
Giants pitcher Blake Snell, who was Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Nationals, has more Box-Toppers points at this point in 2024 than he did on the same date in his 2023 NL Cy Young Award-winning season.
Snell (6IP 4H 3R BB 8K W in the 7-4 win over the Nationals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.0 for the season. In 2023, on Aug. 7, Snell had 7.7 Box-Toppers points for the season, when he played for the Padres.
While Snell got off to a slow start in 2024, did not earn his first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor until July 9 and only has two wins in 12 appearances this season, he’s won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in five of his last six starts, including three times in which he did not pick up the win and once on Aug. 2, when he pitched a no-hitter.
Snell also started slow in 2023, not earning his first Player of the Game honor until June 5. Despite that slow start, he became the runaway favorite for NL Cy Young by July and August, even though he finished the season with 14.7 Box-Toppers points, sixth among NL pitchers.
Snell currently ranks 20th among NL pitchers in 2024 Box-Toppers points.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
