About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Yankees pitcher Luis Gil continues his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings, topping the list for the seventh straight week.

Meanwhile, there are two new category leaders this week: Chris Sale of the Braves rises to lead National League pitchers and Brenton Doyle of the Rockies rises to lead NL batters. Meanwhile, Aaron Judge of the Yankees continues to lead AL batters and Gil continues his lead among AL pitchers.

Gil leads

Gil has 13.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, picking up no points in the past week. Despite earning his last Player of the Game honor more than four weeks ago (June 4) he leads season player rankings by 1.0 point.

Gil leads over second-place player, Braves pitcher Chris Sale (12.4 points). He leads AL pitchers ahead of Tarik Skubal of the Tigers (11.4 points).

National League pitchers

Chris Sale of the Braves rises to lead NL pitchers this week with 12.4 points, passing last week’s leader, Zack Wheeler of the Phillies, who falls to second place with 10.7 points.

Sale ranks second among all players.

National League batters

Brenton Doyle of the Rockies rises to lead NL batters this week, passing last week’s leader Bryce Harper of the Phillies, who falls to second place.

Though Doyle and Harper both have 6.7 Box-Toppers points for the season, Doyle ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—4.0 vs. 3.0.

Doyle ranks 42nd overall.

American League batters

Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters for the fourth straight week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He is ahead of second-place Juan Soto of the Yankees (8.5 points).

Though Judge and Soto both have 8.5 points for the season, Judge ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—12.0 vs. 9.0.

Judge ranks 20th among all players.

Box-Toppers almanac

Batters had their best week of the season, nearly winning half of this week’s Player of the Game honors.

Still, pitchers prevailed, winning 49 times in the 93 games played (52.7 percent) compared to 44 times for batters (47.3 percent).

Batters’ overall share of Player of the Game honors won increased from 35.0 percent last week to 35.9 percent this week (470 times in 1,309 total games). Pitchers have won 839 times or 64.1 percent.

Batters also made overall gains in share of Box-Toppers points won this season, winning 36.3 percent of all points (565.6 out of 1,559.6), while pitchers have won 63.7 percent (994.0 points). Batters increased their overall share from 35.5 percent last week.

(Note: These statistics were updated Friday afternoon to reflect a correction in one Player of the Game winner this week from Thursday in which a pitcher won Player of the Game honors rather than a batter, as was originally posted.)

The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) Batters still trail the record-low set in 2022, but have made gains in recent weeks, gaining 3.5 percent from 32.8 percent five weeks ago to 36.3 percent this week.

While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
