Rays lead Box-Toppers team rankings for 7th week; Dodgers lead NL teams

The Tampa Bay Rays maintain their lead in Box-Toppers team rankings for the seventh straight week.

Here are Box-Toppers final 2023 team rankings through games of Thursday, May 18. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from May 12 to May 18 . The column Wk ago shows the team's rank on May 11.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers maintain their lead among National League teams and the St. Louis Cardinals are the week’s hottest team.

Rays players have accumulated 40.6 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 3.5 points in the past week. They lead over the second-place Dodgers (36.8) by 4.3 points.

The Rays have baseball’s best winning percentage (0.711) and are led by pitchers Shane McClanahan (6.7 Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players and fourth among AL pitchers) and Drew Rasmussen (6.7 Box-Toppers points, sixth among all players and fifth among AL pitchers). Though both McClanahan and Rasmussen have 6.7 points, McClanahan ranks higher because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—16.4 vs. 11.1. Rasmussen is on the 60-day injured list with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow. He could return in August or could be out around a year if he requires surgery.

Rays’ top batter is Randy Arozarena (3.5 points, 10th among AL batters). There are 15 different Rays players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

The Dodgers lead NL teams for the third straight week with 36.3 Box-Toppers points, picking up 5.5 in the past week, rising from third to second place overall.

The Dodgers have the second-best winning percentage among NL teams (0.622), behind the Atlanta Braves (0.628), who rank ninth overall and fourth among NL teams with 30.0 Box-Toppers points.

The Dodgers are led by pitcher Clayton Kershaw (6.1 points), seventh overall and second among NL pitchers. Top batter is James Outman (4.7 points), first among NL batters. There are 16 different Dodgers players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

The St. Louis Cardinals are the week’s hottest team, picking up 7.5 Box-Toppers points in the past week, most of any team, rising from 27th to 22nd place overall with 22.2 points. Their five-spot rise in rankings was also the biggest jump among all teams.

The Chicago Cubs had the biggest decline among all teams in the past week, falling six spots from 19th to 25th place, picking up 1.0 point in the past week.

The Oakland Athletics rank 30th and last in Box-Toppers team rankings for the fifth week in a row with 11.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.5 points in the past week.

Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
