Brewers’ Woodruff tops players for Wednesday, Sept. 28; Urias, Gallen, Judge also earn points

Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to fifth place in season player rankings.

Also Wednesday, two other players in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list earned Player of the Game honors—Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias (sixth place) and Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen (seventh place).

Plus, Aaron Judge of the Yankees extended his lead among American League batters in 2022 Box-Toppers points, earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday while hitting his 61st home run of the season, tying Roger Maris’ 1961 mark for most home runs by an AL player in a season.

Player of the Day—Woodruff struck out 10 over six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk, in the 5-1 win over the Cardinals.

Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 19.8 for the season, rising from seventh to fifth place among all players and second place among NL pitchers, behind only Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins (21.1).

Woodruff had a Box-Toppers game score Wednesday of +10.0, same as Pirates pitcher Bryse Wilson, who was Player of the Game in the 4-3, 10-inning win over the Reds (8IP 3H 0R BB 6K ND). But Woodruff won overall Player of the Day on a tiebreaker because he earned the win while Wilson picked up a no-decision. As a result, Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points, while Wilson earns 1.0.

Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day.

American League Player of the Day—Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill struck out nine over six scoreless innings allowing five hits and one walk, in the 3-1 win over the Orioles.

Hill earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 6.7 for the season, 38th among AL pitchers.

Eduardo Escobar of the Mets is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—Eduardo Escobar of the Mets homered and went 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in five runs, in the 5-4, 10-inning win over the Marlins.

Escobar earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 5.5 for the season, 20th among NL batters.

Jake Cave of the Twins is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Jake Cave of the Twins hit two doubles and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in one run, in the 8-4 win over the White Sox.

Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Padres.

Urias—Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias actually fell from fifth to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings despite earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Urias (6IP 6H 0R 2BB 5K ND in the 1-0, 10-inning win over the Padres) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 19.4 for the season. But Woodruff, who previously was in seventh place, leapfrogged over Urias, earning 2.0 points as Player of the Day, rising to fifth place and pushing Urias down to sixth. Urias also falls from second to third place among NL pitchers behind Alcantara (21.1) and Woodruff (19.8).

Aaron Judge of the Yankees is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Blue Jays.

Judge earned his 12th Player of the Game honor of 2022 in the game in which he hit his 61st home run of the season, tying the record for most home runs in a single season by an AL player set by Roger Maris 61 years ago.
