Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani is Thursday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to second place in player rankings.

Also Thursday, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove rises to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning National League Player of the Day honors.

Player of the Day—Ohtani struck out six over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks, in the 4-1 win over the Mariners.

Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.0 for the season, second among all players, behind Thursday’s NL Player of the Day Musgrove (11.4). Ohtani rises to first place among American League pitchers, passing previous leader Shane McClanahan of the Rays (10.7).

Ohtani becomes the third player this season to reach 10 Box-Toppers points. It is the second straight season he’s had 10 or more points. He had 16.1 points in 2021, third among AL pitchers.

Ohtani has now won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the seventh time this season, his fourth as a starting pitcher. The other three came as a designated hitter. He’s earned 7.0 of his points as a pitcher and 4.0 as a batter. He still qualifies to be ranked among both pitchers and batters and currently maintains his lead among AL batters with 11.0 points, ahead of second-place Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (7.2).

National League Player of the Day—Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove struck out nine over seven innings, allowing two runs, five hits and one walk, in the 6-4 win over the Cubs.

Musgrove earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.4 for the season, rising to first place among all players, passing previous leader Shane McClanahan of the Rays (10.7), who falls to third place overall. Musgrove now leads over second-place player Ohtani (11.0). Musgrove maintains his lead among NL pitchers, ahead of second-place Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins (8.7).

This is the third time this season Musgrove has led all players in Box-Toppers points. He led previously twice for one day each before falling out of the top spot—on April 19 with 4.0 points and on June 3 with 8.7 points.

Musgrove has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors nine times in 2022, earning overall Player of the Day honors (worth 2.0 total points) on April 14 and earning NL Player of the Day honors (worth 1.7 points) one other time, on June 3.

Musgrove becomes the fourth player to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points this season. It is his second season with 10.0 or more points. In 2021, he had 16.1 Box-Toppers points with the Padres, ninth among NL pitchers. In 2021, 49 players had 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points.
