Astros pitcher Framber Valdez is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s World Series Game 6.

The Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 to win the best-of-seven game World Series, 4-2.

Valdez struck out nine over six innings, allowing one run and two walks.

This was his fourth Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the postseason, most of any player and his second Player of the Game honor of the World Series, also most of any player.

In the regular season, Valdez earned 16.0 Box-Toppers points, 14th overall and fifth among AL pitchers.

Yordan Alvarez has highest Box-Toppers game score (+1.0) among Astros batters in Saturday’s win over the Phillies.

Valdez had a Box-Toppers game score of +9.0, highest among Astros players Saturday. Astros top batter was left fielder Yordan Alvarez with a +1.0 game score (HR 1-4 R 3BI). Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler had a +2.1 game score (5.1IP 3H 2R BB 5K L).

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler had a +2.1 Box-Toppers game score in loss Saturday to Astros.

Valdez earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in each of his four postseason appearances, including these previous three:

  • Oct. 13: ALDS Game 2 win over the Mariners.

  • Oct. 20: ALCS Game 2 win over the Yankees.

  • Oct. 29: World Series Game 2 win over the Phillies.

Astros pitcher Framber Valdez was also Box-Toppers Player of the Game in World Series Game 2.

Valdez now has the most Player of the Game honors of the postseason, followed by two players with three each—Saturday’s Phillies starter Zack Wheeler and Padres closing pitcher Josh Hader. Four other players each had two postseason Player of the Game honors each—Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola, Astros pitcher Cristian Javier, Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole and Phillies reliever Seranthony Dominguez.

Here is a look back at Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners for each World Series game:

While Jeremy Peña was named World Series MVP, Framber Valdez is Box-Toppers’ World Series MVP.

Valdez is Box-Toppers’ World Series MVP

Jeremy Pena of the Astros was named World Series Most Valuable Player. He went 10-for-25 in the series, batting .400, hitting one home run, two doubles and three runs batted in. He was Box-Toppers top-ranked Astros batter in Game 5 with a Box-Toppers game score of +2.0, but otherwise had a negative game scores in Astros wins, including Saturday (-1.0 game score, 2-4 R 0BI).

Box-Toppers’ World Series MVP is Framber Valdez, the only player to earn Player of the Game honors twice during the series. While Pena had an impressive series, his contributions weren’t the most key element in helping his team to victory in any of the games. Valdez’ run prevention was the most key element in two of the four wins.

Pena did earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors on Oct. 23 in the ALCS Game 4 win over the Yankees. That was his first career Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor. Though he played in 136 games in his 2022 rookie season, he did not earn Player of the Game honors in any of those games and so has not yet made his regular season Box-Toppers debut and has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Astros were overwhelming favorites

The Astros were the overwhelming favorites over the Phillies going into the World Series.

The Astros were Box-Toppers’ second-ranked team in the regular season while the Phillies were 13th overall, just barely above the middle of the pack of all 30 teams. The Astros are the highest-ranked American League team in Box-Toppers rankings, while the Phillies are the lowest-ranking National League postseason team.

Though the Phillies were underdogs, they beat every previous favored postseason opponent, doing it in dominating fashion, losing only two of their 11 playoff games before the World Series. They exit the World Series losing three straight to the Astros.

The Astros not only ranked far higher in Box-Toppers rankings than the Phillies, they had clear Box-Toppers point advantages in most every breakdown—among starting rosters, among starting nine batters, among starting pitchers and among relief pitchers.
