Milwaukee Brewers rise to lead Box-Toppers weekly team rankings report

The Milwaukee Brewers, the week’s hottest team, rise to lead this week’s Box-Toppers team rankings report.

The Brewers pass the Chicago White Sox, leaders for the past four weeks, but the White Sox maintain their lead among American League teams for the fifth straight week.

Here are Box-Toppers 2021 team rankings, through the games of Thursday, July 1. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from June 25 to July 1. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of June 24.

Brewers players have accumulated 63.5 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 9.2 points in the past week, most among all teams. The Brewers lead National League teams in Box-Toppers rankings for the fourth straight week.

The Brewers are tied for baseball’s fifth-best winning percentage (.598), behind the San Francisco Giants (.625), Boston Red Sox (.622), Los Angeles Dodgers (.617) and Chicago White Sox (.600). They are tied with the Houston Astros (.598). The Giants are ninth in Box-Toppers team rankings (54.0 Box-Toppers points), the Red Sox are fourth (59.6), the Dodgers are third (60.1), the White Sox are second (61.5) and the Astros are seventh (57.0).

The Brewers are led by pitcher Brandon Woodruff with 13.4 Box-Toppers points, third among all players and second among National League pitchers. Brewers’ top batter is Christian Yelich with 4.0 Box-Toppers points, 10th among NL batters. There are 22 Brewers players who have earned Player of the Game honors in the team’s 49 wins this season.

The Brewers earned 9.2 Box-Toppers points, winning all seven games they played in the past week and have won nine straight, the longest current winning streak.

While the White Sox fall from first to second place overall with 61.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 4.0 points in the past week, they lead AL teams for the fifth straight week. The White Sox have the second-best winning percentage among AL teams (.600), behind the Red Sox.

The White Sox are led by pitcher Lance Lynn with 7.7 Box-Toppers points, sixth among AL pitchers. White Sox’ top batter is Jose Abreu with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, fourth among AL batters. There are 22 White Sox players who have earned Player of the Game honors in the team’s 48 wins this season.

The Boston Red Sox had the biggest rise in standings among all teams this week, climbing six spots from 10th to fourth place with 59.6 Box-Toppers points, earning 8.0 points in the past week.

The Chicago Cubs had the biggest decline in standings, falling seven spots from 13th to 20th place with 45.9 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week.

Two teams fall into a tie for 29th and last place in Box-Toppers team rankings this week—the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Pittsburgh Pirates, both with 29.0 points on the season and both picking up 2.0 points in the past week. The Diamondbacks were ranked 29th last week and the Pirates were ranked 28th. Last week’s lowest-ranked team, the Baltimore Orioles, rise to 28th place with 30.7 points, picking up 4.0 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
