About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Notable—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels earned his first Player of the Game honor as a pitcher in nearly three years Tuesday.

Ohtani (4IP H 0R 6BB 7K ND vs. TEX) last earned Player of the Game honors as a pitcher May 20, 2018. Ohtani has now earned 5.0 of his 15.5 career Box-Toppers points as a pitcher and the other 10.5 as a designated hitter.

In 2018, Ohtani earned 8.0 total Box-Toppers points, 4.0 as a pitcher and 4.0 as a designated hitter. Ohtani underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2018 and while he didn’t pitch in 2019, he earned 6.5 Box-Toppers points as a designated hitter, fifth among AL designated hitters.

In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Ohtani batted in 44 of the 60 games and pitched in two, but did not earn Player of the Game honors and so had 0.0 Box-Toppers points. Ohtani’s pitching in 2020 was limited by a right elbow flexor strain.

Tuesday was the first time Ohtani earned Box-Toppers points in 2021.

Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s win over the Rangers.

Scoring—Urias earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Luzardo earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Abreu and Posey each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
