Also Friday, three players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 after each earned Player of the Game honors—Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom rises to second, Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola rises to fourth and Twins pitcher Kenta Maeda rises to sixth.

Plus, Luke Voit of the Yankees regains the lead in 2020 Box-Toppers points among American League batters after earning AL Batter of the Day honors Friday.

Player of the Day—Woodruff struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 1-0 win over the Cubs. Woodruff did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.

Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 18th among all players and ninth among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day—Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 6-0, seven-inning win over the Orioles.

Cole earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 5.4 for the season, 17th among all players and seventh among AL pitchers. Cole led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2019 with 32.2.

American League Batter of the Day—Luke Voit of the Yankees hit two three-run homers and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in six runs, in the 10-1, seven-inning win over the Orioles.

Voit earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 6.0 for the season,  12th among all players and rising to first among AL batters. He passes previous AL batting leader Kyle Tucker of the Astros (5.0) and now ranks ahead of second-place AL batter Eloy Jimenez of the White Sox (5.5), who also earned 1.0 point as Player of the Game Friday (HR 2-4 R 3BI in the 4-3 win over the Tigers).

National League Batter of the Day—Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies hit a grand slam and went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in five runs, in the 8-4 win over the Angels.

Rankings—Three players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after each earned Player of the Game honors Friday:

  • Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom (6IP 3H R 2BB 9K W in the 18-1 win over the Blue Jays) rises from third to second place with 8.7 points, first among NL pitchers, passing previous leader Yu Darvish of the Cubs. While Darvish also has 8.7 points, deGrom ranks ahead because he had more 2019 points—19.1 vs. 10.4. deGrom also has 105.4 career Box-Toppers points, 72nd among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.0 point Friday, he passes Scott Kazmir (105.1) on the “all-time” list and now trails 71st-ranked player Aramis Ramirez (105.8).

  • Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola (7IP 3H 0R 0BB 10K W in the 11-0, seven-inning win over the Marlins) rises from ninth to fourth place with 7.7 points, third among NL pitchers.

  • Twins pitcher Kenta Maeda (7IP 4H 0R 2BB 7K W in the 3-1 win over the Indians) rises from 10th to sixth place with 6.0 points, third among AL pitchers, behind Shane Bieber of the Indians (9.7) and Lance Lynn of the Rangers (7.4). (Maeda ranks behind Lynn because he had fewer 2019 points—8.7 vs. 15.0.)

Debut—Nate Lowe of the Rays made his Box-Toppers debut Friday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Lowe (2HR 3-4 3R 4BI in the 11-1 win over the Red Sox) made his Major League debut April 29, 2019, and was playing in his 57th career game.

Scoring—Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Cole earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Voit and Blackmon each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
