Giolito rises to third place in Box-Toppers season player rankings. Also Tuesday, Indians pitcher Shane Bieber extends his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Giolito pitched a complete-game, no-hit shutout, striking out 13 and allowing one walk, in the 4-0 win over the Pirates.

Giolito earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.0 for the season, rising from 10th to third place in season player rankings, second among AL pitchers behind Bieber (8.7). Giolito ranks ahead of Angels pitcher Dylan Bundy, who also has 6.0 Box-Toppers points on the season, because he has more 2019 points—13.7 vs. 4.7.

Giolito had a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of +21.0, the highest for a Player of the Game winner so far in 2020, ahead of the +18.0 game score achieved July 30 by Bieber (8IP 3H 0R 0BB 13K W in the 2-0 win over the Twins). In 2019, only one Player of the Game winner had a higher Box-Toppers game score—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander had +22.0 on Sept. 1, also pitching a no-hitter (CG 0H 0R BB 14K W in the 2-0 win over the Blue Jays).

American League Batter of the Day—Ryan O’Hearn of the Royals homered and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 5-4 win over the Cardinals.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Tuesday becuase the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Brandon Belt.

Rankings—Indians pitcher Shane Bieber extended his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Bieber (6IP 4H 2R 3BB 10K W in the 4-2 win over the Twins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.7 for the season. Bieber now takes a 2.7-point lead ahead of second-place player, Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer (6.0), meaning it will take at least two appearances for any player in the top 10 to catch or pass him.

Streak—Mitch Moreland of the Red Sox has now earned Box-Toppers points in 11 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2020 Tuesday.

Moreland (2B 2-3 2R 2BI in the 9-7 win over the Blue Jays) earned his first points in 2010 with the Rangers and now has 32.2 career points, which ranks 23rd among active AL batters. His best season was 2015 with the Rangers when he had 6.2 Box-Toppers points, fifth among AL first basemen. He had 4.0 points with the Red Sox in 2019.

Debut—Marlins pitcher Trevor Rogers made his Box-Toppers debut Tuesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
