About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Buehler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 54th among all players, 16th among National League pitchers. He had 16.4 Box-Toppers points in 2019 and his combined 18.4 points over 2019-20 now ranks fifth among NL pitchers.

American League Player of the Day—Jonathan Schoop of the Tigers homered, doubled and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 10-5 win over the Indians.

Schoop had a Box-Toppers game score Friday of +3.0, the same as four other AL batters who earned Player of the Game honors. But Schoop won AL Player of the Day honors on a tiebreaker because he had both the most at bats (five) and the most hits (four) among those players—Jose Abreu of the White Sox, Hunter Dozier of the Royals, Cavan Biggio of the Blue Jays and Kyle Lewis of the Rangers.

National League Batter of the Day—Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates homered, tripled and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 7-2 win over the Brewers.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Jonathan Schoop.

Notable—Cavan Biggio of the Blue Jays has the most 2020 Box-Toppers points among the 14 who earned Player of the Game honors Friday.

Biggio (2B 3-3 2R BI in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Rays) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 3.5 for the season, 26th among all players and fifth among AL batters.

Debut—Three players made their Box-Toppers debut Friday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Padres pitcher Javy (Alexis) Guerra (2.1IP 0H 0R BB 3K W in the 4-3 win over the Astros) made his Major League debut May 4, 2018, and was playing in his 18th career game.

  • Kyle Lewis of the Mariners (HR 1-2 3R BI in the 7-4 win over the Rangers) made his Major League debut Sept. 10, 2019, and was playing in his 45th career game.

  • Red Sox pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez (2IP H 0R BB 3K W in the 8-5 win over the Orioles) made his Major League debut April 23, 2019, and was playing in his 30th career game.

Scoring—Buehler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Schoop earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Reynolds earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
