Angels’ Bundy tops players for Saturday, July 25; Phillies’ Gosselin tops NL players

Box-Toppers Daily Scorecard graphic.png

Angels pitcher Dylan Bundy is Saturday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Bundy struck out seven over 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run, three hits and no walks, in the 4-1 win over the Athletics.

Bundy earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points off the season, and ranks second overall in Box-Toppers season player rankings, behind overall leader Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks. Both have 2.0 Box-Toppers points on the season, but Hendricks ranks higher because he had more 2019 points (13.4 vs. 4.7).

National League Player of the Day—Phil Gosselin of the Phillies hit two home runs and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 7-1 win over the Marlins.

Gosselin earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks sixth overall in extremely early Box-Toppers season player rankings. He earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2019.

American League Batter of the Day—Leury Garcia of the White Sox hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 10-3 win over the Twins. Garcia went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Saturday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Phil Gosselin.

Notable—Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright now has 127.6 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 39th among all players since 1995, after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Wainwright (6IP 3H R BB 5K W in the 9-1 win over the Pirates), with the 1.0 Box-Toppers point earned Saturday, passed two players on the “all-time” list—Roy Oswalt (127.2) and John Lackey (127.2) and now trails 38th-ranked player A.J. Burnett (127.8). Wainwright ranks eighth in career points among active NL pitchers. He earned 7.4 points in 2019, 42nd among NL pitchers.

Also notable—Rockies pitcher Daniel Bard earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the first time in more than nine years Saturday.

Bard (1.1IP 2H 0R 0BB K W in the 3-2 win over the Rangers) last earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors July 1, 2011, with the Red Sox. He now has 6.7 career Box-Toppers points (2009-2020).

Bard last played in the Majors in 2013 and was out of baseball struggling with control and other issues. While Box-Toppers doesn’t specifically keep track, this has got to be one of the longest gaps—if not the longest—between earning Player of the Game honors since Box-Toppers player tracking in 1995.

Debut—Giants pitcher Caleb Baragar made his Box-Toppers debut Saturday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Baragar (2IP 0H 0R 0BB K W in the 5-4 win over the Dodgers) was also making his Major League debut Saturday. He is the first player to make his Box-Toppers debut in 2020.

Scoring—Bundy earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gosselin earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Garcia earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
