Braves' Wood, Red Sox' Buchholz top players for Sunday, Aug. 31

Braves pitcher Alex Wood is Sunday’s Player of the Day. Wood pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out 12 in the 1-0 win over the Marlins.

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz is American League Player of the Day. Buchholz pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout, striking out six, in the 3-0 win over the Rays.

Matt Holliday of the Cardinals is National League Batter of the Day. Holliday homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 9-6 win over the Cubs. This is the second day in a row Holliday has earned NL Batter of the Day, so he has picked up 3.0 Box-Toppers points in the past two days. He now has 7.5 Box-Toppers points for the season and ranks third among NL batters, behind overall leader Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies (11.6 Box-Toppers points) and Freddie Freeman of the Braves (7.7 Box-Toppers points).

Dustin Ackley of the Mariners is AL Batter of the Day. Ackley homered and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 5-3 win over the Nationals.

Athletics' Jon Lester (CG 0R 8K) tops players for Thursday, Aug. 7

Athletics pitcher Jon Lester is Thursday’s Player of the Day, earning his first Box-Toppers points since being traded from the Red Sox.

Lester pitched a complete game shutout and struck out eight in the 3-0 win over the Twins. He earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 12.0 for the season and moving into 16th place in Box-Toppers player rankings. He ranks 10th among American League pitchers.

Reds pitcher Homer Bailey is National League Player of the Day. Bailey pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out eight in the 4-0 win over the Indians.

Javier Baez of the Cubs is NL Batter of the Day. Baez homered twice and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 6-2 win over the Rockies. This was Baez’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time he has earned Player of the Game honors. He is the 3,395th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995. He made his Major League debut Aug. 5 and was playing in his third game.

Rays' Odorizzi tops players for Saturday, June 21, Wainwright reclaims Box-Toppers points lead

Rays pitcher Jake Odorizzi is Saturday’s Player of the Day, while Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright reclaims the top spot in Box-Toppers player rankings.

Odorizzi pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings and struck out 10 in the 8-0 win over the Astros.

Wainwright rose to first place in season Box-Toppers player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday (see the updated top 10 player list on the home page). Wainwright (8IP 1R 7K W in the 4-1 win over the Phillies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 13.0 for the season. He passes Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka (12.7 Box-Toppers points), who only took the top spot from Wainwright on Tuesday. Wainwright previously held the top spot from May 25 to June 16.

Dodgers pitcher Josh Beckett is National League Player of the Day. Beckett pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out eight in the 4-2 win over the Padres.

Mark Reynolds of the Brewers is NL Batter of the Day. Reynolds doubled and went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in two runs in the 9-4 win over the Rockies.

Dustin Ackley of the Mariners is American League Batter of the Day. Ackley hit the go-ahead ninth-inning single in the 2-1 win over the Royals.

Odorizzi receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Beckett receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Reynolds and Ackley each receive 1.5 for being top Batter of the Day in their league.

Pirates' Francisco Liriano tops players for Friday, Aug. 30, rises to fifth in Box-Toppers player rankings

Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano is Friday's Player of the Day and rises to fifth place in Box-Toppers player rankings for the season.

Liriano pitched eight shutout innings and gave up only two hits in the 5-0 win over the Cardinals. Liriano earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 16.7 for the season.

He rises to fifth place in Box-Toppers player rankings (see the updated top 10 list on the home page).  This is Liriano's career high Box-Toppers point total for a season. His previous high was 15.7 in 2010 with the Minnesota Twins. 

Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle is American League Player of the Day. Buehrle pitched seven scoreless innings in the 3-2 win over the Royals. 

Todd Helton of the Rockies is National League Batter of the Day. Helton hit two home runs and drove in six runs in the 9-6 win over the Reds. This is the first time in more than two years that Helton has earned Player of the Game honors—his last time was Aug. 8, 2011. Helton has 116.4 career Box-Toppers points, ranked 32nd among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers record-keeping began.
