About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Though he’s now out for the season, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler maintains his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings for the 15th straight week.
Meanwhile, all Box-Toppers category leaders remain unchanged since last week: Tarik Skubal of the Tigers leads American League pitchers, Christian Yelich of the Brewers leads National League batters and José Ramírez of the Guardians leads AL batters.
Wheeler leads
Wheeler has 20.1 Box-Toppers points in 2025, picking up no points in the past week.
He last earned Player of the Game honors Aug. 10, went on the injured list Aug. 16 with a diagnosed blood clot and was ruled out for the season on Aug. 23 with a diagnosis of venous thoracic outlet syndrome. That is a condition in which the subclavian vein, located below the collar bone, is compressed, leading to symptoms like arm swelling, discoloration, and heaviness. Wheeler was set to undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery, with recovery time expected to be six to eight months.
With a month to go in the season, Wheeler is still leading the second-place player, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (19.4 points) by 0.7 points. He leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Paul Skenes of the Pirates (18.1 points).
Wheeler led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2024 with 21.4.
American League pitchers
Tarik Skubal of the Tigers leads for the eighth week with 19.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place AL pitcher Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox (16.1 points).
Skubal ranks second overall.
National League batters
Christian Yelich of the Brewers leads for the fifth week with 11.2 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies (11.0 points).
Yelich ranks 19th among all players.
American League batters
José Ramírez of the Guardians leads for the third week with 9.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads second-place Riley Greene of the Tigers (9.0 points).
Ramírez ranks 32nd among all players.
Box-Toppers almanac
Batters won Player of the Game honors in 39 of the 95 games played in the past week (41.1 percent) with pitchers winning the other 56 (58.9 percent).
Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season increased from 39.2 percent last week to 39.3 percent this week (789 times in 2,010 total games). Pitchers have won Player of the Game honors in the other 1,221 games (60.7 percent).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points earned this season increased from 39.2 percent last week to 39.3 percent this week (940.6 points out of 2,390.7 total awarded). Pitchers have won 60.7 percent of all points.
Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
