Rankings

Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta maintains third place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Pivetta (7IP H R 0BB 5K W in the 4-1 win over the Cardinals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 15.7 for the season. He trails overall leader, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (19.1 points) and Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (16.4 points). Pivetta ranks second among NL pitchers, 3.4 points behind Wheeler. With the possibility of earning as many as 2.0 Box-Toppers points per appearance, it would take at least two starts for Pivetta to catch or pass Wheeler.

Debut

In addition to Bernabel, Otto Kemp of the Phillies also made his Box-Toppers debut Friday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Kemp (2B 2-2 2R BI in the 5-4 win over the Tigers) made his Major League debut June 7 and was playing in his 39th career game.

Scoring

  • Singer earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Wacha earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Bernabel earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day.

  • All of Friday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

(Editor’s note, correction: Friday’s post on Thursday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners was changed after corrections were made. Initially, the wrong player was listed as Player of the Game in the Yankees win over the Rays. That player, Yankees relief pitcher Yerry De los Santos, also turned out to be overall Player of the Day, ahead of Mariners pitcher George Kirby, who was initially listed as Player of the Day. I believe the errors have been corrected in the revised post.)

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
