Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal maintains second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings and extends his lead among AL pitchers after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.
Skubal (7IP 5H 3R 0BB 10K W in the 7-5 win over the Phillies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 17.4 for the season. He trails overall leader, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (19.1 points), against whom he matched up in Saturday’s game. Wheeler (6IP 9H 4R 3ER 0BB 10K L) recorded a 0.0 Box-Toppers game score in the loss, while Skubal had a +6.0 game score in the victory.
Skubal is now less than 2.0 points behind Wheeler (1.7), meaning he could catch or pass Wheeler for the 2025 Box-Toppers points lead in his next start. Wheeler has led Box-Toppers season player rankings since May 11.
Skubal extends his lead among AL pitchers, 4.3 points ahead of second-place Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox (13.1). Crochet would need at least three starts to reach Skubal’s current 2025 Box-Toppers point total.
Notable
Rangers pitcher Merrill Kelly becomes the 16th player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2025 after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.
Kelly (5.2IP 4H 2R 0BB 6K ND in the 6-4, 11-inning win over the Mariners) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season, 14th among all players and seventh among AL pitchers.
It is his third season with 10 or more Box-Toppers points. His best season was 2023 with the Diamondbacks when he had 13.0 points, seventh among NL pitchers. In 2024, he had 2.0 points with the Diamondbacks.
This was Kelly’s first start with the Rangers since being traded from the Diamondbacks on Thursday. Kelly had the most 2025 Box-Toppers points among players changing teams prior to the July 31 trade deadline (a look at the top 20 trade deadline movers).
Also notable
Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer now has 256.7 career Box-Toppers points—third-most since 1995—after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.
Scherzer (6IP 5H R 0BB 5K W in the 4-2 win over the Royals) trails overall leader Randy Johnson (282.5) and Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (276.1) in “all-time” career points rankings. (It should be noted that Johnson began his career in 1988, before the advent of Box-Toppers tracking. If his entire career were tracked, rough projections put his Box-Toppers point total at 380.)
Scherzer ranks second among active players in career points, behind Kershaw (276.1) and ranks first among active AL pitchers, ahead of second-place Gerrit Cole of the Yankees (165.0).
Scherzer now has 3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2025, 76th among AL pitchers.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
