Notable

Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers on Saturday earned his first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor as a pitcher in nearly two years.

Ohtani (3IP H 0R BB 4K ND in the 2-1 win over the Giants) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 4.5 for the season. While Ohtani earned Player of the Game honors as a pitcher, he does not currently qualify to rank among pitchers since only one of his four Player of the Game honors this season has come as a pitcher. To qualify to rank at a position, a player must have more than 25 percent of their Player of the Game honors at that position. As a result, Ohtani only ranks as a designated hitter. So his 4.5 points ranks 15th among NL batters and seventh among NL designated hitters, even though his point total includes 1.0 as a pitcher.

Ohtani last earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game as a pitcher Aug. 9, 2023, when he was with the Angels. Ohtani underwent elbow surgery at the end of the 2023 season, did not pitch in 2024 after joining the Dodgers that season and did not make his first mound appearance in 2025 until June 16. Saturday was his fifth appearance as a pitcher in 2025.

In the meantime, Ohtani continued to bat and earned 15.5 total Box-Toppers points as a designated hitter from Aug. 26, 2023, to June 27, 2025, including leading NL batters with 11.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024.

At the time of his last Player of the Game honor as a pitcher in August 2023, Ohtani had earned 28.2 of his 73.7 career points as a batter (38.3 percent). When he won his most recent Player of the Game honor as a designated hitter on June 27, Ohtani had increased his share of points earned as a batter to nearly 50 percent—43.7 of his his 89.2 career points (49.0 percent). Ohtani now has 90.2 career Box-Toppers points since 2018—43.7 as a batter (48.4 percent) and 46.5 as a pitcher (51.6 percent).

Ohtani ranked among Box-Toppers’ top three AL pitchers for three straight seasons with the Angels:

  • In 2021, his 16.1 Box-Toppers points ranked third.

  • In 2022, his 24.7 points ranked second.

  • In 2023, his 19.4 points ranked second.

Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers on Saturday earned his first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor as a pitcher in nearly two years.

Scoring

  • Crochet earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Boyd earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Buxton and Merrill each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day.

  • All of Saturday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
