His best season was 2022 with the Giants, when he had 19.8 Box-Toppers points, sixth overall and third among National League pitchers. He had 12.7 points in 2024 with the Yankees, 13th among AL pitchers.

National League Player of the Day

Rockies pitcher Germán Márquez struck out eight over six innings, allowing one run, five hits and three walks, in the 3-2 win over the Reds. Márquez did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Reds tied the game after he exited.

This is Márquez’s first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor since Oct. 2, 2022. Márquez underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in May 2023, having played in just four games that season, earning no Box-Toppers points. He returned in July 2024 but went on the injured list after just one game with a stress reaction in his elbow. He also earned no points in 2024. Friday was his 19th game of the 2025 season and his sixth start in which the Rockies won the game.

In Márquez’s best season, 2021, he earned 17.4 Box-Toppers points with the Rockies, seventh overall and fifth among NL pitchers.

Notable

Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer now has 255.7 career Box-Toppers points—third-most since 1995—after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Scherzer (6IP 5H 3R BB 8K W in the 7-6 win over the Athletics) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 2.0 for 2025.

His 255.7 career points ranks third among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995, behind Randy Johnson (282.5) and Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (276.1). (It should be noted that Johnson began his career in 1988, before the advent of Box-Toppers tracking. If his entire career were tracked, rough projections put his Box-Toppers point total at 380.)

Scherzer ranks second among active, signed players, 20.4 points behind Kershaw. He is first among active AL pitchers in career points, ahead of Gerrit Cole of the Yankees (165.0).

Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer now has 255.7 career Box-Toppers points, third-most since 1995.

Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Friday.

Rafaela (HR 2-4 R 3BI in the 5-4 win over the Rays) was also Player of the Game in Thursday’s 4-3 win over the Rays (2-3 R 2BI). He earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point each day and now has 4.5 points for the season, 15th among AL batters.

Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Friday.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
