Also Monday, Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer has now earned Box-Toppers points in 17 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2025. Other Player of the Game winners Monday include Athletics pitcher J.T. Ginn and Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox.
Player of the Day
Wheeler struck out 10 over eight scoreless innings, allowing six hits sand no walks, in the 4-0 win over the Padres.
Wheeler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 16.1 for the season, extending his lead over second-place player, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (12.7) by 3.4 points.
Wheeler leads National League pitchers ahead of second-place Nick Pivetta of the Padres (11.0 points), a commanding 5.1-point lead.
Wheeler also now has 121.1 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 50th place among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 2.0 points Monday, he passes Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray (120.3) on the “all-time” career points list and now trails 49th-ranked player Gary Sheffield (124.1). (It should be noted that Sheffield began his career before the 1995 advent of Box-Toppers. If his entire career from 1988 were tracked, Box-Toppers estimates his career total at 155.)
Passing Gray, Wheeler now ranks eighth among active, signed players in career points, fifth among active NL pitchers.
American League Player of the Day
Athletics pitcher J.T. Ginn struck out five over 3 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings of middle relief, walking none, in the 6-4 win over the Rays.
Ginn did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was tied when he exited.
Ginn earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 3.7 for the season, 50th among AL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day
Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox hit two home runs—an inside-the-park solo home run and a grand slam—in the 13-6 win over the Reds. Abreu went 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five runs.
Abreu earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 7.5 for the season, 26th among all players and second among AL batters, behind Riley Greene of the Tigers (7.5). Though they both have 7.5 points in 2025, Greene ranks ahead of Abreu because he has more 2024 points—5.2 vs. 4.5.
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because no NL batter won Player of the Game honors in the eight games completed.

Scherzer (5IP 3H 2R 0BB 7K ND in the 5-4 win over the Yankees) earned his first points in 2009 with the Diamondbacks and now has 254.7 career Box-Toppers points, third among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails second-ranked player, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (276.1) by 21.4 points. Scherzer also ranks second among active players, behind Kershaw. He leads active AL players ahead of Gerrit Cole of the Yankees (165.0).
Scherzer’s best season was 2016 with the Nationals when he had 25.7 Box-Toppers points to lead all players. In 2021, Scherzer led all players for the second time with 25.1 Box-Toppers points with the Nationals and Dodgers. He’s had four seasons with 25 or more points and six seasons with 20 or more points. In 2024, he had 2.0 Box-Toppers points with the Rangers, his lowest single-season total in his career to that date.
Scherzer’s 17-season streak earning Box-Toppers points is tied for the second-longest active streak, behind the 18-season streak by Clayton Kershaw. Scherzer’s 17-season streak is tied for the 12th-longest such streak since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
This was Scherzer’s third start of the season and the first in which the Blue Jays won the game. While Scherzer, 40, won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors three times in 2025 spring training games, he was sidelined nearly three months with a right thumb injury during the regular season.
Scoring
Wheeler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.
Ginn earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
