About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler maintains his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings for the seventh straight week, also leading National League pitchers.

Meanwhile, Hunter Brown of the Astros rises to lead American League pitchers, passing previous leader Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox. Also, Christian Yelich of the Brewers rises to lead National League batters and Riley Greene of the Tigers maintains his lead among AL batters.

Wheeler led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2024 with 21.4.

American League pitchers

Hunter Brown of the Astros rises from fifth place last week to first place this week with 11.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week. He passes previous AL pitching leader Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox, who falls to second place with 11.1 points.

Brown ranks second overall.

National League batters

Christian Yelich of the Brewers rises from second place last week to first place this week with 8.2 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 points in the past week. He passes previous NL batting leader Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs, who falls to second place with 7.5 points.

Box-Toppers almanac

Batters won Player of the Game honors in 37 of the 92 games played this week (40.2 percent) with pitchers winning the other 55 (59.8 percent).

That increased batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season to 38.7 percent (469 times in 1,212 total games) from 38.6 percent last week. Pitchers have won Player of the Game honors in the other 743 games (61.3 percent).

Batters also had an increase in their share of Box-Toppers points earned this season from 38.75 percent last week to 38.81 percent this week (560.9 points out of 1,445.4 total awarded). Pitchers have won 61.19 percent of all points.

Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
