Greene just edged Christian Walker of the Astros to win AL Batter of the Day honors Friday. Walker won Player of the Game honors in the 6-3 win over the Rangers with a +2.0 Box-Toppers game score, same as Greene, with a similar line score (HR 2-4 R 3BI). BTP: Box-Toppers points

Braves pitcher Chris Sale rises to 10th place among pitchers on Box-Toppers’ “all-time” career points list after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Sale (7IP 5H R 2BB 8K W in the 4-2 win over the Red Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 175.1 career Box-Toppers points, 10th-most among all pitchers since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

With his 1.0 point Friday, he passes Cole Hamels (174.2) and Felix Hernandez (175.1) on the “all-time” career points list. Though Sale and Hernandez both have the same point total, Sale ranks higher because his points are more recent.

Sale is the first new player among Box-Toppers’ “all-time” top 10 pitchers since Jon Lester joined the list July 27, 2020, when he reached 174.3 career points.

Passing Hamels and Hernandez, Sale now ranks 12th among all players in career Box-Toppers points since 1995. He trails 11th-ranked player Jon Lester (179.3), who also ranks ninth among pitchers since 1995.

Sale ranks fourth among active players in career points, third among active NL pitchers, behind Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (272.4) and Justin Verlander of the Giants (247.0).

Sale has 2.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025, 36th among NL pitchers.

Debut

Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Friday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Eric Wagaman of the Marlins (2B SF 3-4 R 2BI in the 9-4 win over the Rays) made his Major League debut Sept. 10, 2024, and was playing in his 57th career game.

  • Matthew Lugo of the Angels (2-3 2R 0BI in the 6-2 win over the Dodgers) made his Major League debut May 9 and was playing in his seventh career game.

Scoring

  • Ryan earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Burnes earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Flores and Greene each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day.

  • All of Friday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
