Also Tuesday, three players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after earning Player of the Game honors—Pete Alonso of the Mets rises to second place, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler rises to seventh place and Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón rises to ninth place.

Player of the Day

deGrom struck out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and no walks, in the 15-2 win over the Athletics.

deGrom earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 44th among all players and 16th among American League pitchers.

deGrom now has 143.2 career Box-Toppers points, 32nd among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 2.0 points Tuesday, he passes Jake Peavy (141.8) on the “all-time” career points list and now trails 31st-ranked player David Ortiz (145.9).

deGrom ranks sixth among active, signed players in career points, third among active AL pitchers, behind Max Scherzer of the Blue Jays (253.7) and Gerrit Cole of the Yankees (165.0).

This is the 29th time deGrom has won overall Player of the Day honors since he began earning Box-Toppers points in 2014 (he earned his first Player of the Day honor July 8, 2014). However, it is his first Player of the Day honor in more than two years. He last did it April 17, 2023, shortly before injury required elbow surgery that sidelined him for more than a year. Since Sept. 27, 2024, he has earned 4.0 total Box-Toppers points, including 3.0 this season.

National League Player of the Day is Teoscar Hernández of the Dodgers.

National League Player of the Day

Teoscar Hernández of the Dodgers hit two doubles and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 15-2 win over the Marlins.

Hernández earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 20th among NL batters.

Hernández has now earned Box-Toppers points in 10 straight seasons with his first Player of the Game honor of 2025. He earned his first points in 2016 with the Astros and now has 30.4 career points, 35th among active NL batters and 12th among active NL outfielders. His best season was 2022 with the Blue Jays when he had 5.5 Box-Toppers points, 21st among AL batters. He earned 5.0 points in 2024 with the Dodgers, 31st among NL batters.

American League Batter of the Day is Jorge Polanco of the Mariners.

American League Batter of the Day

Jorge Polanco of the Mariners hit two home runs, including a three-run homer, in the 5-3 win over the Angels. Polanco went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in five runs.

National League Batter of the Day

There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Teoscar Hernández.

Rankings

Three players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after each earned Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Pete Alonso of the Mets rises to second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso of the Mets (HR 2-3 2R BI in the 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 5.5 for the season and rises from eighth to second place in season player rankings, trailing only Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta (6.0 points).

Alonso maintains his lead among NL batters ahead of second-place Carson Kelly of the Cubs (4.5). Alonso now is the only batter in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after Kelly dropped off the list, falling to 11th place.

The last time a full-time batter finished the season on the top 10 list was 2013 when Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers finished eighth with 16.9 points. (Shohei Ohtani of the Angels finished third in 2023 with 19.4 points, a season in which he qualified to rank among both pitchers and batters. However, he earned 9.7 of his points as a pitcher and 9.7 points as batter that season.)

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler rises to seventh in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Zack Wheeler

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (6.2IP 5H 2R BB 7K ND in the 7-6 win over the Nationals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 4.7 for the season, seventh among all players and fourth among NL pitchers.

Wheeler also now has 109.7 career points, 71st among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. Wheeler trails 70th-ranked player Jeff Kent (110.2) on Box-Toppers’ “all-time” career points list.

Wheeler ranks 12th among active, signed players in career points, seventh among active NL pitchers.

Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón rises to ninth in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Carlos Rodón

Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón (6IP 2H 2R BB 7K W in the 15-3 win over the Orioles) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 4.7 for the season, ninth among all players and fourth among AL pitchers.

  • Hernández earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.

  • Polanco earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day.

  • All of Tuesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
