Giants’ Estrada, Mariners’ Moore top players in spring games for Tuesday, March 19

Thairo Estrada of the Giants is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.

Thairo Estrada of the Giants is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.

Estrada hit a grand slam, tripled and went 3-for-3, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 9-8 win over the Royals.

Estrada would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Estrada earned no Box-Toppers points in 2023 in 120 games with the Giants. He earned 3.0 points in 2022 in 140 games with the Giants.

American League Player of the Day

Dylan Moore of the Mariners hit a three-run homer and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 12-3 win over the Rockies.

Moore would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Moore earned 2.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Mariners, 81st among AL pitchers.

American League Player of the Day is Dylan Moore of the Mariners.

AL and NL Batters of the Day

There are no separate AL and NL Batters of the Day for Tuesday because the overall Player of the Day is batter Thairo Estrada and the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Dylan Moore.

Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s win over the Rays.

Notable

Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford Tuesday earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the third time in the 2024 spring training season.

Crawford (5.2IP 4H 2R 0BB 6K ND in the 5-2 win over the Rays) was also Player of the Game March 3 (3IP 2H 0R 0BB 4K ND in the 3-1 win over the Blue Jays) and March 9 (3IP 2H 0R 0BB 2K W in the 4-0 win over the Rays).

Three other players earned their second Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the spring Tuesday:

  • Zach Neto of the Angels (HR 3-3 3R 2BI in the 10-6 win over the Reds) was also Player of the Game Feb. 27 (3B 2B 2-3 R 3BI in the 6-4 win over the Brewers).

  • John Rhodes of the Orioles (1-1 2R BI in the 13-8 win over the Blue Jays) was also NL Batter of the Day March 17 (2HR 2-2 2R 4BI in the 8-2 win over the Braves).

  • Mets pitcher Sean Manaea (5IP 4H R BB 6K W in the 3-1 win over the Cardinals) was also Player of the Game March 9 (4IP 2H 0R 3BB 5K W in the 9-3 win over the Cardinals).

Tuesday’s games

In Tuesday’s 13 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were seven Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.

Most notably, Willy Adames of the Brewers (HR 1-3 R 3BI in the 8-5 win over the Guardians) had the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Tuesday’s Player of the Game winners. Adames earned 6.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 16th among NL batters.

In two of Tuesday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Four games ended in ties (Athletics vs. Rangers, Guardians vs. Rockies, Marlins vs. Astros and Phillies vs. Tigers) and so no Player of the Game honors were awarded.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Estrada would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Moore would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
