Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.

Weathers struck out seven over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits, walking none, in the 3-0 win over the Astros.

Weathers would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Weathers earned no Box-Toppers points in 2023 in 15 games with the Padres and Marlins. He has 2.7 career Box-Toppers points, all earned in 2021 with the Padres.

This is Weathers’ second Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the 2024 spring training season. He also did it March 5 (4IP H 0R BB 4K ND in the 2-0 win over the Astros).

American League Player of the Day is Jorge Polanco of the Mariners.

American League Player of the Day

Jorge Polanco of the Mariners hit two home runs, including a grand slam, going 2-for-2, scoring three times and driving in five runs, in the 8-3 win over the Giants.

Polanco would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Polanco earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2023 with the Twins. His best season was 2021 with the Twins when he had 6.7 Box-Toppers points, 16th among AL batters.

National League Batter of the Day is Thomas Saggese of the Cardinals.

National League Batter of the Day

Thomas Saggese of the Cardinals doubled and went 4-for-4, driving in six runs, in the 12-8 win over the Marlins.

Saggese would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Saggese, 21, has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Sunday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Jorge Polanco.

Sunday’s games

In Sunday’s 17 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were 12 Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.

Brandon Drury of the Angels is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Sunday’s win ove the Padres.

Most notably, Brandon Drury of the Angels (HR 2-3 R 2BI in the 5-4 win over the Padres) had the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Sunday’s Player of the Game winners. Drury earned 7.5 Box-Toppers points in 2023, fifth among AL batters.

In four of Sunday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

One game ended in a tie (Blue Jays vs. Orioles) and so no Player of the Game honor was awarded.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Weathers would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Polanco would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Saggese would have earned 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
