Jones hit a three-run homer and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 22-10 win over the Tigers.

Jones would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Jones, 22, has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

National League Player of the Day

Weston Wilson of the Phillies homered, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 14-13 win over the Blue Jays.

Wilson would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Wilson played in eight regular season Major League games in 2023, but did not earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Wilson had a Box-Toppers game score of +5.0 Saturday, same as Bryan De La Cruz of the Marlins, who was Player of the Game in the 9-8 win over the Cardinals (2B 2-2 R 4BI). But Wilson won NL Player of the Day over De La Cruz on a tiebreaker because he had more at bats (three vs. two).

Weston Wilson of the Phillies is Saturday’s Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day.

AL and NL Batters of the Day

There were no separate AL and NL Batters of the Day Saturday since both league’s top batters were also their league’s overall Player of the Day.

Saturday’s games

In Saturday’s 16 spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, only four Player of the Game winners had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.

Most notably, Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson (2.0 2H 0R 0BB 5K W in the 6-2 win over the Rockies), had the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Saturday’s Player of the Game winners. Nelson’s 6.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023 was 39th among NL pitchers.

In 11 of Saturday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

One game (Dodgers vs. Angels) ended in a 7-7 tie and so no Player of the Game honor was awarded.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Wilson would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Jones would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
