Texas Rangers have worst week of all teams but still lead Box-Toppers team rankings

Despite a seven-game losing streak and having the worst week of all 30 Major League Baseball teams, the Texas Rangers maintain the Box-Toppers team rankings lead for the fourth straight week.

Team rankings

Here are Box-Toppers 2023 team rankings through games of Thursday, Aug. 24. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from Aug. 18 to Aug. 24 . The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of Aug. 17.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves continue to lead National League teams and the Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers are the two hottest teams of the week.

Rangers lead

Rangers players have accumulated 109.4 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up no points in the past week, the only team with no gain. The Rangers lost all six games they played this week and are on a seven-game losing streak. Despite this, they still lead all teams, though their 15.7-point lead from last week has shrunk to 8.7 this week. They lead over the second-place Braves (100.7 points) and lead American League teams ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays (100.1 points, falling from second to third place overall).

The Rangers have baseball’s fifth-best winning percentage (.567), behind the Braves (.651), the Baltimore Orioles (.622), the Los Angeles Dodgers (.619) and the Rays (.605) The Braves are second in team rankings (100.7 Box-Toppers points), the Orioles are sixth (94.5), the Dodgers are fourth (96.7) and the Rays are third (100.1).

The Rangers are led by pitcher Max Scherzer (13.4 Box-Toppers points, ninth among all players and fifth among American League pitchers). Rangers top batter is Marcus Semien (6.7 Box-Toppers points, eighth among AL batters). There are 25 different Rangers players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

Braves lead NL teams

The Braves lead NL teams for the fourth week with 100.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 7.0 in the past week, tied with the Brewers for most points gained this week. The Braves rise from third to second place overall this week and rank ahead of the second-place NL team, the Dodgers (96.7) by 4.0 points.

The Braves have baseball’s best winning percentage (.651) and are led by pitcher Spencer Strider (17.4 points, second among all players and first among NL pitchers). Top batter is Ronald Acuna Jr. (7.7 points, third among NL batters). There are 25 different Braves players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

Hottest teams: Braves and Brewers

Two teams both had gains of 7.0 Box-Toppers points this week, most of any team: The Braves, rising from third to second with 100.7 points and the Brewers, rising from 11th to eighth with 89.2 points. The Brewers three-spot rise in rankings was also the biggest jump among all teams.

Biggest fall: Angels

The Los Angeles Angels had the biggest fall in team rankings, down two spots from 10th to 12th place, with 83.3 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week.

Last place: Athletics

The Oakland Athletics are 30th and last place in Box-Toppers team rankings for the second straight week with 36.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
