BTP: Box-Toppers points
* Three players had the most 2022 Box-Toppers points at their position but do not appear on the All-MLB Team ballot. Instead, Box-Toppers voted for the next-highest ranked player at each position, marked on the chart with a †.
† Box-Toppers substitute choices for All-MLB Team. They are the next-highest ranking player at the position who appear on the All-MLB Team ballot.

Unlike the midseason All-Star Game choices, players are chosen regardless of league, meaning the All-MLB Teams will likely be a mix of both American League and National League players. Box-Toppers posted its AL and NL All-Star teams for all of 2022 on Nov. 5.

Here are Box-Toppers choices for the All-MLB team:

First base

Pete Alonso of the Mets led all batters, as well as all first basemen with 14.9 Box-Toppers points. He ranked 20th among all players.

Second base

Trevor Story of the Red Sox led at the position with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, 97th among all players and 11th among AL batters. Story, however, is not among the eight finalists on the ballot at the position.

The highest-ranked finalist is Marcus Semien of the Rangers, whose 7.0 Box-Toppers points is second among all second basemen, second among AL second basemen, 12th among AL batters and 99th among all players. Though Story and Semien both earned 7.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, Story ranks higher because he had more 2021 Box-Toppers points—6.7 vs. 6.2.

Shortstop

Xander Bogaerts of the Red Sox led at the position with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, 95th among all players and ninth among AL batters.

Third base

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians led at the position with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, 36th among all players and second among AL batters.

Catcher

Cal Raleigh of the Mariners led at the position with 7.5 Box-Toppers points, 89th among all players and seventh among AL batters.

Outfield

Box-Toppers chose the three outfielders with the most Box-Toppers points in 2022:

  • Aaron Judge of the Yankees ranked first at the position with 13.2 Box-Toppers points, 28th among all players and first among AL batters.

  • Mookie Betts of the Dodgers ranked second at the position with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, 38th among all players and second among NL batters.

  • Mark Canha of the Mets ranked third at the position with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, 72nd among all players and third among NL batters.

Canha, however, was not one of 20 outfield finalists to appear on the ballot. Box-Toppers’ next highest-ranked outfielder on the ballot is George Springer of the Blue Jays, whose 8.0 Box-Toppers points ranked 79th among all players, fifth among AL batters and second among AL outfielders.

Designated hitter

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros led at the position with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, 70th among all players and third among AL batters.

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels is one of five designated hitter finalists on the ballot. And while he did had more 2022 Box-Toppers points (24.7, second overall and second among AL players), he earned only 5.0 as a designated hitter, the other 19.7 as a starting pitcher. And because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors as a pitcher (13 of 17), he did not qualify to be ranked among designated hitters or batters.

Starting pitchers

The All-MLB Team ballot requires voting for five starting pitchers. These five had the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among all starting pitchers:

  • Justin Verlander of the Astros had 26.0 Box-Toppers points, first among all players and first among AL pitchers.

  • Shohei Ohtani of the Angels had 24.7 Box-Toppers points, second among all players and second among AL pitchers.

  • Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins had 21.1 Box-Toppers points, third among all players and first among NL pitchers.

  • Brandon Woodruff of the Brewers had 20.8 Box-Toppers points, fourth among all players and second among NL pitchers.

  • Dylan Cease of the White Sox had 20.4 Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players and third among NL pitchers.

Woodruff is not one of the 23 starting pitchers on the All-MLB team ballot. Box-Toppers’ next highest-ranked pitcher is Carlos Rodon of the Giants, whose 19.8 Box-Toppers points is sixth among all players and third among NL pitchers.

It also should be noted that Ohtani earned 5.0 of his 24.7 Box-Toppers points as a designated hitter. Subtracting his batting points to reflect just his pitching total would give him 19.7, which would rank sixth overall, just behind Rodon.

Relievers

Box-Toppers chose the two relievers with the most Box-Toppers points in 2022:

  • Daniel Bard of the Rockies, whose 8.0 Box-Toppers points is 81st overall, first among NL closers.

  • Edwin Diaz of the Mets, whose 7.0 Box-Toppers points is 100th overall, second among NL closers.

The top AL closer, Scott Barlow of the Royals, had 7.0 Box-Toppers points and ranked third among all closers. Though Barlow had the same Box-Toppers point total as Diaz, he ranked behind him because he had fewer 2021 Box-Toppers points—5.0 vs. 5.7.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
