BTP: Box-Toppers points

This is Cole’s first regular-season Player of the Game honor since Sept. 26, 2024. Cole had missed the first half of 2024 after an MRI revealed a tear in his elbow ulnar collateral ligament. He pitched the second half of the season, earning 9.7 Box-Toppers points, 28th among AL pitchers. In March 2025, he underwent Tommy John surgery to reconstruct his UCL, missed the entire season and earned no points. Cole earned Box-Toppers points in 12 straight seasons (2013-2024) before that streak ended in 2025.

Cole now has 167.0 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 16th place among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 2.0 points Wednesday, he passes two players on the “all-time” career points list—Manny Ramirez (166.2) and Johan Santana (166.6). (It should be noted if Ramirez’s career were tracked from 1993, he would have about 173 points.) Cole now trails 15th-ranked player Roy Halladay (170.7).

Cole ranks fourth among active, signed players in career points, third among active AL pitchers, behind Max Scherzer of the Blue Jays (257.7) and Justin Verlander of the Tigers (250.0).

NL Player of the Day: Cristopher Sánchez, Phillies

Sánchez struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits and no walks, in the 3-0 win over the Padres.

Sánchez earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points as NL Player of the Day, giving him 10.7 for the season, rising from third to first place in season player rankings, passing previous leader, Pirates pitcher Braxton Ashcraft, who falls to third overall with 9.4 points. Sánchez also passes Ashcraft to take the lead among NL pitchers.

Sánchez becomes the first player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2026. (Teammate Zack Wheeler reached 10 points first in 2025 on May 23, one of 44 players to reach that milestone during the season.) This is Sánchez’s third straight season with 10 or more points, all with the Phillies. His best season was 2025 with 15.4 points, 11th overall and seventh among NL pitchers.

Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez jumps to first place overall after winning National League Player of the Day honors.

AL Batter of the Day: Blaze Alexander, Orioles

Alexander homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in six runs, in the 11-2 win over the Rays.

AL Batter of the Day: Blaze Alexander, Orioles.

NL Batter of the Day: Juan Soto, Mets

Soto homered and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in one run, in the 4-2 win over the Reds.

NL Batter of the Day: Juan Soto, Mets.

Rankings: Gavin Williams, Guardians

Williams rises from fourth to second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Williams (7IP 3H R 2BB 4K W in the 3-2 win over the Nationals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 9.7 for the season. He trails only Sánchez (10.7 points) and bolsters his lead among AL pitchers, ahead of Cam Schlittler of the Yankees (9.7 points).

Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams rises to second place, bolstering his lead among American League pitchers.

Rankings: Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers

Ohtani rises from eighth to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Ohtani (6IP 0H R 4BB 7K W in the 4-1 win over the Rockies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.7 for the season.

This was Ohtani’s seventh Player of the Game honor of 2026 and his fifth as a starting pitcher; the other two have come as a designated hitter. Because he has more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors as a batter (28.6 percent) and a pitcher (71.4 percent), he qualifies to rank at both positions with his full 8.7 Box-Toppers point total.

As a result, he ranks fourth among NL pitchers and first among NL batters, ahead of Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks (5.5 points). However, separately, his 6.7 points as a pitcher would rank ninth among NL pitchers and his 2.0 points as a designated hitter would rank 32nd among NL batters.

Ohtani now has 99.9 career Box-Toppers points, 54.3 earned as a pitcher and 45.7 as a batter.

Ohtani also played as a designated hitter Wednesday (HR 1-4 R BI), separately recording a -1.0 Box-Toppers game score as a batter.

Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani climbs to sixth place with his seventh Player of the Game honor of 2026, his fifth as a pitcher.

Debut

Tigers pitcher David Sandlin made his Box-Toppers debut Wednesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Sandlin (6IP H R 0BB 4K W in the 15-2 win over the Twins) was also making his Major League debut.

Scoring

  • Cole earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points as Player of the Day.

  • Sánchez earns 1.7 points as NL Player of the Day.

  • Alexander and Soto each earn 1.5 points as their league’s Batter of the Day.

  • All of Wednesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
