Player of the Day

Soto hit a grand slam, tripled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in six runs, in the 10-8 win over the Tigers.

Soto earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season, 81st among all players and 10th among National League batters.

Soto becomes the 11th batter in 2025 to win overall Player of the Day honors. Pitchers have won all other days of the season. In 2024, only five batters won overall Player of the Day honors.

American League Player of the Day is Rays pitcher Shane Baz.

He earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.0 for the season, 63rd among all players and seventh among AL batters.

Correction: Story’s reported Box-Toppers point total has been inaccurate since July 4. On that day, I miscalculated and gave him an extra Box-Toppers point—he should have had 3.5 rather than the 4.5 I reported. Subsequently, each of the three times since he’s won Player of the Game honors, his Box-Toppers point total was incorrectly inflated by 1.0:

  • On July 29, he earned 1.0 point, giving him 4.5 (not the 5.5 reported).

  • On Aug. 2, he earned 1.5 points, giving him 6.0 (not the 7.0 reported).

  • And on Aug. 16, he earned 1.0 point, giving him 7.0 (not the 8.0 reported).

I apologize for the error and will work forward to keep my Story straight.

Debut

In addition to Freeman, three other players made their Box-Toppers debut Monday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Nationals pitcher Andrew Alvarez (5IP H 0R 2BB 4K W in the 2-0 win over the Marlins) was also making his Major League debut.

  • Drew Gilbert of the Giants (HR 4-4 2R 2BI in the 8-2 win over the Rockies) made his Major League debut Aug. 8 and was playing in his 18th career game.

  • Jeremiah Jackson of the Orioles (HR 3-5 2R BI in the 4-3 win over the Padres) made his Major League debut Aug. 1 and was playing in his 27th career game.

Scoring

  • Soto earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Baz earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Freeman earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day.

  • All of Monday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
