Player of the Day

Benintendi hit two home runs, including a three-run homer, in the 12-3 win over the Twins. Benintendi also went 4-for-5, scoring three times and driving in five runs.

Benintendi earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.5 for the season, 243rd among all players and 45th among AL batters.

It’s the 12th time this season a batter has won overall Player of the Day honors and the second day in a row—Juan Soto of the Mets won Player of the Day Monday. It’s also the third time in the past six days a batter has won overall Player of the Day honors—Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies did it last Thursday.

Pitchers have won all other days of the season. In 2024, only five batters won overall Player of the Day honors.

National League Player of the Day

Kyle Tucker of the Cubs hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 4-3 win over the Braves.

Tucker exited the game early with calf tightness but described the situation as day-to-day.

Tucker earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 4.7 for the season, 32nd among NL batters.

National League Player of the Day is Kyle Tucker of the Cubs.

AL and NL Batters of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Andrew Benintendi. There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Kyle Tucker.

George Springer of the Blue Jays rises to first place among American League batters after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Rankings

George Springer of the Blue Jays rises to first place among American League batters after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Springer (2HR 3-4 3R 3BI in the 12-9 win over the Reds) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 9.7 for the season, 32nd among all players and rising to first among AL batters, passing previous leader José Ramírez of the Guardians (9.5 points), who falls to second place.

While there is about a month remaining in the season, the 9.7-point total Springer has to lead AL batters would be the lowest point total to lead a category (in a regular-length season) since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. The record low is 10.7 points by Nolan Arenado of the Rockies to lead NL batters in 2016. The record low to lead AL batters in a season is 12.1 by Edwin Encarnacion of Cleveland in 2017. (Point totals to lead categories were lower in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.)

Also, while Springer leads AL batters in Box-Toppers points, he’s not necessarily in the conversation for candidates to win the AL Most Valuable Player Award. However, the prime candidates for that award aren’t even among the top 10 batters in Box-Toppers points:

Tuesday’s Sidelights Sidebar

Box-Toppers post reviewing the day’s top pitchers, overlooked top performers & lowest Box-Toppers game scores is on Substack:

Crochet records Tuesday’s 3rd-lowest game score, but Red Sox hold on to win

  • Aaron Judge of the Yankees has hit 43 home runs, second among AL batters, but has just 5.0 Box-Toppers points, 24th among AL batters.

  • Cal Raleigh of the Mariners has 51 home runs, first among all batters, but has just 6.0 Box-Toppers points, 13th among AL batters.

Despite the prodigious home run totals, neither player is winning Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors frequently. Either their team is losing the game when they hit homers or a teammate is winning Player of the Game honors, outperforming them, when they do hit home runs.

Clayton Kershaw #Dodgers did not earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game in start Tuesday vs. PIT (5IP 4H 4R 4BB 3K ND) with -8.0 B-T game score. He remains in 2nd in career B-T pts (since 1995) at 278.8, 3.7 behind "all-time" leader Randy Johnson (282.5). www.box-toppers.com/blog/2025/9/...

However, in 2024, Judge was able to win Player of the Game honors frequently while hitting lots of home runs. He led AL batters in both homers (58) and Box-Toppers points (13.0).

Also, while Judge and Raleigh currently lag behind the AL batting Box-Toppers points leaders, there is a month left in the season and so, still time to rise in rankings. Last year on Sept. 2, Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers had 5.0 Box-Toppers points for the season and ranked outside the top 10 NL batters in Box-Toppers points. But he earned 6.0 points in a 13-day surge at the end of the season, giving him 11.0 for 2024 and rising to first among NL batters, in a season in which his 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases made him the overwhelming NL MVP favorite.

Scoring

  • Benintendi earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Tucker earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.

  • All of Tuesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
