Other Player of the Game winners Sunday include Mickey Moniak of the Rockies, Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox and Willy Adames of the Giants.
Player of the Day
Wheeler pitched a complete game, striking out 12 and allowing one run, one hit and no walks, in the 3-1 win over the Reds.
Wheeler allowed only one baserunner, giving up a fifth-inning home run to Austin Hays of the Reds.
Wheeler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 18.1 for the season, extending his lead among all players ahead of second-place player, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (14.4), who was Sunday’s AL Player of the Day.
Wheeler also extends his lead among National League pitchers, now 6.1 points ahead of second-place Nick Pivetta of the Padres (12.0 points). That large of a lead means it will take Pivetta at least four starts for a chance to catch Wheeler.
At just over halfway through the season, Wheeler is already approaching his single-season highest Box-Toppers points total of 21.4 in 2024, which led all players. At his current rate, Wheeler would finish the season with 32.6 Box-Toppers points, which would be the fourth-highest single-season point total since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
Wheeler recorded a +18.0 Box-Toppers game score Sunday, the third-best among all Player of the Game winners so far this season. Here are the two higher game scores in 2025:
+20.0 by Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal on May 25 (CG 2H 0R 0BB 13K W in the 5-0 win over the Guardians).
+19.0 by Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray on June 27 (CG H 0R 0BB 11K W in the 5-0 win over the Guardians).
There was another +18.0 game score recorded by a Player of the Game winner in 2025, by Skubal on June 29 (7IP H 0R BB 13K W in the 3-0 win over the Twins). But Wheeler’s game score Sunday ranks ahead on a tiebreaker because he had more innings pitched in his game, nine vs. seven.
Wheeler also now has 123.1 career Box-Toppers points, 50th-most among all players since tracking began in 1995. He trails 49th-ranked player Gary Sheffield (124.1). (It should be noted that Sheffield began his career before the 1995 advent of Box-Toppers. If his entire career from 1988 were tracked, Box-Toppers estimates his career total at 155.)
Wheeler ranks eighth among active, signed players in career points, fifth among active NL pitchers.
American League Player of the Day
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 7-2, 10-inning win over the Guardians. Skubal did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Skubal earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 14.4 for the season, maintaining second place overall behind Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (18.1 points), Sunday’s overall Player of the Day. Skubal extends his lead among AL pitchers, ahead of Hunter Brown of the Astros (12.4 points).
National League Batter of the Day
Mickey Moniak of the Rockies homered, tripled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 6-4 win over the White Sox.
American League Batter of the Day
Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in one run, in the 6-4 win over the Nationals.
Notable
Willy Adames of the Giants earns Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Sunday.
Adames (HR 1-3 R 3BI in the 6-2 win over the Athletics) was also Player of the Game Saturday in the 7-2 win over the Athletics (3-5 0R 4BI). He earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point each day, giving him 5.5 for the season, ninth among NL batters.
He also rises to first place among NL batters over 2024-25 with 16.0 Box-Toppers points over that span, passing previous leader Juan Soto of the Mets (16.0 points). While Adames and Soto both have 16.0 points, Adames ranks ahead because he has more 2025 points than Soto—5.5 vs 5.0.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
