In addition, Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox rises to first place among AL batters after earning AL Batter of the Day honors Wednesday.

Player of the Day

Gray struck out eight over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 5-0 win over the Pirates.

Gray earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 4.0 for the season, 23rd among all players and eighth among National League pitchers.

Gray now has 114.3 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 62nd among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 2.0 points Wednesday, he passes six players on the “all-time” career points list—Kevin Brown (112.8), Sammy Sosa (113.2), Dan Haren (113.2), Chris Carpenter (113.3), Orioles pitcher Charlie Morton (113.5) and Carlos Carrasco (114.2). (Two of these six players began their careers before the start of Box-Toppers tracking, so they would have more points if their entire careers were tracked. Box-Toppers estimates that Brown would have about 164 points if his entire career from 1986 were tracked and that Sosa would have about 134 points if his entire career from 1989 were tracked.)

Gray now trails 61st-ranked player Ervin Santana (114.4).

Gray rises to ninth place in career points among active, signed players, passing Morton (113.5). He ranks sixth among active NL pitchers.

American League Player of the Day

Royals pitcher Michael Wacha (7IP 3H 0R BB 5K W in the 2-1 win over the White Sox) earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points, giving him 2.7 for the season, 25th among AL pitchers.

American League Batter of the Day

Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox (2B 2HR 3-4 2R 3BI in the 6-4 win over the Rangers) earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points, giving him 5.0 for the season, 13th among all players and rising to first place among AL batters, passing previous leader, teammate Alex Bregman (3.7).

Interestingly, Abreu just beat Bregman for Player of the Game in Wednesday’s Red Sox win. Like Abreu, Bregman also had a +3.0 Box-Toppers game score (HR 2B 3-4 2R 3BI), but Abreu held the tiebreaker because he had more home runs—two vs. one.

National League Batter of the Day

Juan Soto of the Mets (2HR SF 2-4 2R 3BI in the 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks) earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points, his first points of the season. Soto earned 11.0 points in 2024 with the Yankees, second among AL batters.

Rankings

Two players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earned Player of the Game honors Wednesday:

Max Fried

Yankees pitcher Max Fried (7IP 5H R 0BB 8K ND in the 4-3, 10-inning win over the Padres) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 5.7 for the season, fourth overall and first among AL pitchers, passing previous leader Hunter Brown of the Astros (5.4 points).

Fried had a +8.0 Box-Toppers game score Wednesday, the same as Royals pitcher Michael Wacha. But Wacha held the tiebreaker edge over Fried to earn AL Player of the Day honors because he earned the win in his game while Fried picked up a no-decision.

Hunter Greene

Reds pitcher Hunter Greene (3IP 2H 0R 0BB 6K ND in the 4-3 win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 5.7 for the season, fifth overall and fourth among NL pitchers.

Greene exited Wednesday’s game with groin pain but still pitched the minimum three innings to receive consideration for Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors.

While Green and Fried both have 5.7 points in 2025, Fried ranks higher because he has more 2024 points—13.4 vs. 9.7.

Scoring

  • Gray earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Wacha earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Abreu and Soto each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day.

  • All of Wednesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
