Giants pitcher Robbie Ray is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.
Other Player of the Game winners Sunday include Braves pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach, Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler, Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer, Freddy Fermin of the Royals and Alec Bohm of the Phillies.
Player of the Day
Ray struck out six over three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 9-5 win over the Angels.
Ray had a Box-Toppers game score of +8.0, best among all Giants players and highest among all Sunday Player of the Game winners.
Ray earned 3.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 89th among National League pitchers.
If this were a regular season game, Ray would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 1.0 bonus point as overall Player of the Day). However, no Box-Toppers points are awarded because it’s a preseason exhibition game.
American League Player of the Day
Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler struck out four over two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 6-4 win over the Mets.
Buehler had a Box-Toppers game score of +5.0, best among all Red Sox players and highest among all Sunday AL Player of the Game winners.
Buehler earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024 for the Dodgers, but more notably, earned Player of the Game honors twice during the postseason, once in the NL Championship Series on Oct. 16 and once in the World Series on Oct. 28.
If this were a regular season game, Buehler would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.7 bonus points as AL Player of the Day).
American League Batter of the Day
Freddy Fermin of the Royals went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 10-4 win over the Padres.
Fermin had a Box-Toppers game score of +4.0, best among all Royals players and highest among all Sunday AL Batter of the Game winners.
Fermin earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024.
If this were a regular season game, Fermin would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.5 bonus points as AL Batter of the Day).
National League Batter of the Day
Alec Bohm of the Phillies hit two home runs and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 5-4 win over the Orioles.
Bohm had a Box-Toppers game score of +3.0, best among all Phillies players and highest among all Sunday NL Batter of the Game winners.
Bohm earned 4.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 47th among NL batters.
If this were a regular season game, Bohm would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.5 bonus points as NL Batter of the Day).
Notable
Braves pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors Sunday for the second time in the 2025 spring training season.
Schwellenbach (3IP H 0R 0BB K ND in the 11-1 win over the Yankees) was also Player of the Game Feb. 25 in the 2-1 win over the Pirates (2IP H 0R 0BB 2K ND).
He also had the most 2024 Box-Toppers points among Sunday’s Player of the Game winners. His 7.7 points was 41st among NL pitchers.
Also notable
Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer has the most career Box-Toppers points among Sunday’s Player of the Game winners.
Scherzer (3.2IP H R 0BB 4K ND in the 5-4 win over the Phillies) has 253.7 career points, third among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995 and second among active players behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (272.4). Scherzer earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024 with the Rangers.
Sunday’s games
In Sunday’s 16 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were 10 Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In four of Sunday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Two games ended in a tie (Rays vs. Twins and Brewers vs. Guardians). No Player of the Game honors are awarded in tie games.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Ray would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Buehler would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Fermin and Bohm would have each earned 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
