Other Player of the Game winners Friday include Braves pitcher Hurston Waldrep, Orioles pitcher Charlie Morton, Colby Thomas of the Athletics and Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

Player of the Day

Young struck out six over eight scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 7-0 win over the Astros.

This was Young’s Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Young made his Major League debut April 19 and was playing in his 11th career game.

National League Player of the Day is Braves pitcher Hurston Waldrep.

National League Batter of the Day

Christian Yelich of the Brewers hit two home runs, doubled and went 4-for-5, scoring three times and driving in five runs, in the 10-8 win over the Reds.

Yelich earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 11.2 for the season, most among Friday’s Player of the Game winners, 13th among all players and first among NL batters, extending his lead ahead of second-place Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs (9.5 points).

Yelich becomes the 23rd player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2025 and the first batter. In 2024, 59 players reach 10 Box-Toppers points, including six batters. (In 2024, Aaron Judge of the Yankees was the first to reach 10 Box-Toppers points on July 27.)

This is the third season Yelich has reached 10 Box-Toppers points. Previously, he did it:

  • In 2018, 11.5 points with the Brewers, first among NL batters.

  • In 2019, 11.7 points with the Brewers, second among NL batters.

In 2024, he earned 3.5 points with the Brewers, 58th among NL batters.

By reaching 11.2 Box-Toppers points, Yelich guarantees there will be no record set in 2025 for the lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead NL batters. The lowest season total to lead NL batters since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995 was 10.7 by Nolan Arenado of the Rockies in 2016.

American League Batter of the Day is Colby Thomas of the Athletics.

American League Batter of the Day

Colby Thomas of the Athletics hit a three-run homer and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 10-3 win over the Angels.

This was Thomas’s Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Thomas made his Major League debut June 30 and was playing in his 21st career game.

Kershaw ranks 1st among active players in career points

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (6IP 2H R BB 3K W in the 3-2 win over the Padres) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 277.1 career Box-Toppers points, second among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995 and first among all active players.

Kershaw trails overall leader Randy Johnson (282.5) by 5.4 points. (It should be noted that Johnson began his career in 1988, before the advent of Box-Toppers tracking. If his entire career were tracked, rough projections put his Box-Toppers point total at 380.)

Kershaw leads active players in career points ahead of the second-place player, Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer (256.7). Kershaw leads active NL pitchers ahead of second-place Justin Verlander of the Giants (247.0).

Kershaw now has 4.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025, 50th among NL pitchers. He has only two seasons with fewer points than the 4.7 he has now—his 2009 rookie season (4.0) and 2024 (2.0), both with the Dodgers.

Tigers pitcher Charlie Morton is 10th in active career Box-Toppers points.

Morton ranks 10th among active players in career points

Tigers pitcher Charlie Morton (6IP 2H 0R 3BB 5K W in the 7-0 win over the Twins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 119.5 career points, 52nd-most among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

With his 1.0 point Friday, he passes two players on the “all-time” career points list—Carlos Delgado (118.7) and Cliff Lee (119.1). He now trails 51st-ranked player Gary Sheffield (124.1). (Sheffield began his career before the 1995 advent of Box-Toppers. If his entire career from 1988 were tracked, Box-Toppers estimates his career total at 155.)

Morton ranks 10th among active, signed players in career points, fourth among active AL pitchers.

Morton now has 6.0 Box-Toppers points in 2025, 36th among AL pitchers.

Blue Jays closing pitcher Jeff Hoffman earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Friday.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
