A Box-Toppers look at how teams are faring in offseason leading into 2025

The Los Angeles Dodgers are Box-Toppers’ top-ranked team going into 2025 but with player injuries factored in, the New York Mets hold the overall edge.

Figuring Los Angeles Dodgers team Box-Toppers point total

The Los Angeles Dodgers lead all teams in Box-Toppers as of early February in offseason team rankings. Dodgers players on the current roster accumulated 118.7 Box-Toppers points (BTP) in 2024. Here is a look at those players on the current roster whose points are included in that calculation. Players are listed with their position, their 2024 Box-Toppers point total and the team with whom they finished the 2024 season. For example, Blake Snell had the most 2024 Box-Toppers points among prospective 2025 Dodgers players, earning 15.7 points with the San Francisco Giants (sf nl). (Players on the Dodgers roster not listed here earned no points in 2024.)

About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

The current 2025 roster of last year’s World Series champion Dodgers accumulated 118.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, most of any team. However, with several players injured and expected to miss time in 2025, their injury-adjusted Box-Toppers point total drops to 106.7, fifth among all teams.

Meanwhile, the Mets, with no significant injuries going into 2025, have a roster with a combined 116.8 Box-Toppers points earned in 2024, second behind the Dodgers, but first among teams in injury-adjusted standings.

The Philadelphia Phillies are close behind with 116.0 Box-Toppers points, third among all teams and second in injury-adjusted rankings. The Phillies roster is mostly intact from 2024 when they led all teams in Box-Toppers points.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are Box-Toppers’ top American League team, while the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers have made the most significant offseason improvements.

Two teams that have made splashy offseason player acquisitions rank among the top three teams. The top-ranked Dodgers notably acquired pitcher Blake Snell from the San Francisco Giants. His 15.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024 is the most by a player changing teams in the offseason. The second-ranked Mets notably acquired outfielder Juan Soto from the Yankees, who has the most 2024 Box-Toppers points among batters changing teams in the offseason (11.0).

The Atlanta Braves have the biggest decline among all teams, dropping 11 spots from fifth to 16th place, while the Milwaukee Brewers have the largest Box-Toppers-point decline from 2024, falling 27.2 points from 123.7 at the end of last season to 96.5 with their current roster, dropping them 10 spots from second to 12th place.

Box-Toppers recalculates team totals based on offseason player movement and signings. The Box-Toppers points players earned in 2024 are subtracted from their previous team and added to their 2025 team. Free agents’ Box-Toppers point totals are also excluded and not added to a team until they sign. (Also note that while free agents are listed among a team’s “key losses” for 2025, there is always the chance they will re-sign with their old team and become a “key holdover.”)

Separately, Box-Toppers calculates how much a player’s prospective absence due to injury or other factors may affect a team. For example, San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove is expected to miss all of 2025 as he recovers from elbow surgery. Musgrove earned 9.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, so the Padres’ team total is also figured with an injury adjustment, with those 9.7 points subtracted. That takes the Padres from ninth place overall with 103.9 combined points to 13th with 94.2 points with the injury adjustment.

Here is a closer look at how key teams fare in Box-Toppers’ team standings as of early February:

Los Angeles Dodgers

Rank: First with 118.7 Box-Toppers points.

Change in ranking since end of 2024: Rise of seven spots from eighth, tied for the third-biggest jump among all teams.

Net change in points: +5.0.

Key additions: Starting pitcher Blake Snell (15.7 points, seventh overall, fifth among National League pitchers) from the Giants, closing pitcher Kirby Yates (6.0 points, fourth among AL closers) and closing pitcher Tanner Scott (4.0 points) from the Padres. The Dodgers also notably signed starting pitcher Roki Sasaki, 23, from Japan, but he has yet to play in the Major Leagues so has no Box-Toppers points.

Key losses: Starting pitcher Jack Flaherty (12.0 points, 17th among NL pitchers) to the Tigers.

Key holdovers: Pitcher Tyler Glasnow (11.7 points, 19th among NL pitchers) and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (11.0 points, first among NL batters). In addition, Ohtani is expected to return to pitch in May after recovering from elbow surgery at the end of the 2023 season. Ohtani earned 19.4 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Angels, third-most overall that season, including 9.7 as a pitcher and 9.7 as a batter, before undergoing his second career elbow surgery.

Injury adjustment: -12.0 points. Starting pitchers Gavin Stone (9.0 points, 31st among NL pitchers) and River Ryan (2.7 points) are expected to miss the season after undergoing elbow surgery. Pitcher Michael Kopech (2.0 points) is expected to miss at least the first month of the season.

The Dodgers fall four spots to rank fifth among all teams with the 12.0-point injury adjustment deduction, bringing their total from 118.7 to 106.7 points.

Additional thoughts: The additions of Japanese pitchers Sasaki and Ohtani could boost the Dodgers in 2025. But Sasaki is unproven and Ohtani is coming off his second elbow surgery. The Dodgers added another highly touted Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto in 2024 and he earned 6.4 Box-Toppers points, 48th among NL pitchers, all in the first half of the season. He missed three months with a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Also, pitcher Clayton Kershaw is an unsigned free agent expected to rejoin the Dodgers in 2025. While Kershaw leads active players in career Box-Toppers points (272.4), he earned just 2.0 points in 2024, the lowest single-season total in his 17-year career, as he battled injury much of the season. Kershaw will be 37 in the 2025 season.

Teams with biggest losses

Here are the teams with the biggest losses in Box-Toppers points from the end of 2024 to the current 2025 offseason standings. Twenty-two of the 30 teams currently have fewer points than they did at the close of 2024:

Milwaukee Brewers

Loss: First with 27.2-point loss. Second among teams with biggest ranking decline, dropping 10 spots from second overall at the end of 2024 (123.7 points) to 12th in 2025 offseason rankings (96.5 points).

Key additions: Pitcher Nestor Cortes (15.4 points, ninth among AL pitchers) from the Yankees.

Key losses: Shortstop Willy Adames (10.5 points, third among NL batters) to the Giants, pitcher Colin Rea (10.4 points, 22nd among NL pitchers) to the Cubs, pitcher Frankie Montas (6.0) to the Mets and reliever Cole Sands (6.0) to the Twins.

Key holdovers: Pitcher Freddy Peralta (13.4 points, seventh among NL pitchers), pitcher Tobias Myers (10.0 points, 26th among NL pitchers) and pitcher Aaron Civale (7.1).

Injury adjustment: -2.2. Pitcher Robert Gasser (2.7) is expected to miss much of the season after undergoing elbow surgery in June. Their 94.3 injury-adjusted point total is 11th among all teams, a one-spot improvement.

Atlanta Braves

Loss: Second with 26.3-point loss. Biggest decline in rankings among all teams, falling 11 spots from fifth overall at the end of 2024 (118.9 points) to 16th in 2025 offseason rankings (92.6 points).

Key additions: Outfielder Jurickson Profar (4.5 points) from the Padres.

Key losses: Pitcher Max Fried (13.4 points, eighth among NL pitchers) to the Yankees, pitcher Charlie Morton (9.4, 30th among NL pitchers) to the Orioles and catcher Travis d'Arnaud (3.5) to the Angels.

Key holdovers: Pitcher Chris Sale (19.1 points, fifth overall, fourth among NL pitchers), pitcher Reynaldo López (12.8 points, 11th among NL pitchers), pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach (7.7) and designated hitter Marcell Ozuna (7.5 points, ninth among NL batters).

Injury adjustment: -1.7. Reliever Ray Kerr (1.0) is out for the season, recovering from July elbow surgery. Starter Spencer Strider (1.0) is expected to miss the first month recovering from April elbow surgery. Reliever Joe Jimenez (1.0) could miss anywhere from half to the entire season recovering from knee surgery. That gives the Braves a 90.9 injury-adjusted point total, actually boosting them one spot to 15th place.

Note: Two key players are likely to return to the Braves in 2025, both of whom were Box-Toppers points leaders in 2023, but who were both injured in 2024. Pitcher Spencer Strider led all players with 21.1 Box-Toppers points in 2023, but just 1.0 point in 2024 before undergoing elbow surgery in April. Ronald Acuña Jr. ranked second among NL batters in 2023 with 10.7 Box-Toppers points but earned 0.0 points in 2024, playing in just 49 games before tearing his left knee ACL. Both are expected to rejoin the Braves after the start of the season and if they perform close to their 2023 levels, they would rocket the Braves to the top in overall rankings.

Texas Rangers

Loss: Third with 18.3-point loss, a six-spot decline from 20th overall at the end of 2024 (87.1 points) to 26th in 2025 offseason rankings (68.8 points).

Key addition: Designated hitter Joc Pederson (6.5 points, 14th among NL batters) from the Diamondbacks.

Key losses: Pitcher Andrew Heaney (9.0 points) to free agency and closer Kirby Yates (6.0) to the Dodgers.

Key holdovers: Pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (13.0 points, 12th among AL pitchers) and pitcher Cody Bradford (8.4).

Injury adjustment: No adjustment. Their 68.8-point injury-adjusted total remains 26th among all teams.

San Diego Padres

Loss: Fourth with 17.9-point loss, a six-spot decline from third overall at the end of 2024 (121.8 points) to ninth in 2025 offseason rankings (103.9 points).

Padres’ key additions, losses, holdovers and injury adjustment information is included in the review of the overall top 10 ranked teams.

Houston Astros

Loss: Fifth with 17.7-point loss, a five-spot decline from 10th overall at the end of 2024 (110.5 points) to 15th in 2025 offseason rankings (92.8 points).

Key addition: Biggest addition is first baseman Christian Walker (2.5 points) from the Diamondbacks.

Key losses: Pitcher Yusei Kikuchi (10.7 points, 22nd among AL pitchers) to the Angels and outfielder Kyle Tucker (6.0 points, 15th among NL batters) to the Cubs.

Key holdovers: Pitcher Framber Valdez 15.4 points, 10th overall, fifth among AL pitchers), pitcher Hunter Brown (12.0 points, 15th among AL pitchers), closer Josh Hader (11.0 points, first among AL closers), pitcher Ronel Blanco (10.7 points, 24th among AL pitchers) and designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (7.5 points, eighth among AL batters).

Injury adjustment: -0.5. Pitcher Cristian Javier (1.0) is expected to miss the first half of the season recovering from June elbow surgery. Their 92.3-point injury-adjusted total actually boosts them one spot to 14th in injury-adjusted standings.
