Four Box-Toppers points leaders among players named to 2025 All-MLB First Team

Major League Baseball announced its All-MLB teams for 2025, top players at each position as voted by fans and a panel of experts. A First Team and Second Team were named, regardless of American League or National League. Shown below are the All-MLB teams and each players’ 2025 Box-Toppers point total and rank in points among all players.

BTP: Box-Toppers points
** Lenyn of the White Sox led first basemen and second basemen in Box-Toppers points. Rather than placing him at both positions, we picked the second baseman who ranked second—Jose Altuve of the Astros.

The All-MLB team is selected with half the vote coming from fans and half coming from an expert panel. Unlike the selections for baseball’s All-Star Game, players are chosen not based on their affiliation with the American League or National League. Instead, players are selected from all Major League Baseball teams, regardless of league affiliation, and are designated as “First Team” or “Second Team.”

Notably, three Most Valuable Player favorites are on the All-MLB First Team but are not on Box-Toppers’ All-MLB Team. Aaron Judge of the Yankees, Cal Raleigh of the Mariners and Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers all hit more than 50 home runs and racked up impressive statistics in 2025. But all three did not perform well in the Box-Toppers metric this season, as all three were comparatively rarely the player who contributed most to their team’s wins. (For more, see previous post: Why Judge, Raleigh, Ohtani don’t appear on Box-Toppers’ 2025 MVP ballots.)

Here are the four Box-Toppers points leaders also selected for the All-MLB First Team:

Here are the five Box-Toppers points leaders selected for the All-MLB Second Team:

Here is a Box-Toppers position-by-position look at the All-MLB teams, how players chosen for the teams fared in Box-Toppers points and who Box-Toppers would have chosen for those spots based on their season Box-Toppers point total.

First base

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays is a First Team selection. His 4.0 Box-Toppers points ranked 245th among all players, 47th among AL batters and 19th among all first basemen.

Second Team selection is Nick Kurtz of the Athletics with 4.5 Box-Toppers points, 235th among all players, 44th among AL batters and 17th among all first basemen.

Box-Toppers’ choice: Lenyn Sosa of the White Sox, who led at the position with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, 68th overall and seventh among AL batters.

Second base

Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks is a First Team selection. His 5.5 Box-Toppers points is 172nd among all players and fifth among all second basemen.

Second Team selection is Brice Turang of the Brewers, whose 2.0 Box-Toppers points is 459th among all players, 35th among all second basemen.

Box-Toppers’ choice: Jose Altuve of the Astros. Though he ranks second at the position with 8.0 Box-Toppers points, Lenyn Sosa of the White Sox, who ranks first (8.5 points), also leads all first basemen. Rather than having Sosa occupy both positions, we place Altuve at second base on Box-Toppers’ All-MLB Team. Altuve ranks 74th among all players and ninth among AL batters.

Shortstop

Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals, chosen as First Team selection, has 2.5 Box-Toppers points, 374th among all players and 21st among all shortstops.

Second Team selection is Bo Bichette of the Blue Jays, whose 1.5 Box-Toppers points is 556th among all players and 39th among all shortstops.

Box-Toppers’ selection: Willy Adames of the Giants, whose 8.5 Box-Toppers points leads shortstops, is 66th among all players and sixth among NL batters.

Third base

José Ramírez of the Guardians, selected as First Team selection, is also Box-Toppers’ selection, leading all third basemen with 9.5 Box-Toppers points, 50th among all players and second among AL batters.

Second Team selection is Junior Caminero of the Rays, whose 9.0 Box-Toppers points is third among all third basemen and fifth among AL batters.

Catcher

Cal Raleigh of the Mariners is a First Team selection. His 6.0 Box-Toppers points ranks sixth among all catchers and 139th among all players.

Second Team selection is Will Smith of the Dodgers, whose 1.0 Box-Toppers point is 35th among all catchers and 593rd among all players. He has the fewest 2025 Box-Toppers points among the 32 players selected for the All-MLB First and Second Teams.

Box-Toppers’ selection, Salvador Perez of the Royals, leads catchers with 9.5 Box-Toppers points, 53rd among all players and third among AL batters.

Outfield

Aaron Judge of the Yankees, Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners and Juan Soto of the Mets are First Team selections.

None of the three are Box-Toppers’ selections as they are not among the top three outfielders in 2025 Box-Toppers points:

  • Judge has 6.5 Box-Toppers points, 12th among all outfielders and 127th among all players.

  • Rodriguez has 5.5 Box-Toppers points, 20th among all outfielders and 173rd among all players.

  • Soto has 7.0 Box-Toppers points, ninth among all outfielders and 101st among all players.

Second All-MLB Team selections for outfield are Cody Bellinger of the Yankees, Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks and Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs.

Among those three, only Crow-Armstrong is among the top three outfielders in 2025 Box-Toppers points. He has 9.5 Box-Toppers points, second among all outfielders, 54th among all players and fifth among NL batters.

Bellinger and Carroll are not among Box-Toppers’ top three outfielders:

  • Bellinger has 5.9 Box-Toppers points, 19th among all outfielders and 158th among all players.

  • Carroll has 5.2 Box-Toppers points, 24th among all outfielders and 183rd among all players.

Box-Toppers’ selections for All-MLB outfield, in addition to Crow-Armstrong, are:

  • George Springer of the Blue Jays, who leads all outfielders with 9.7 Box-Toppers points, 46th among all players and first among AL batters. (Springer also qualifies to rank among designated hitters and his 9.7 points is third among all players at that position.)

  • Riley Greene of the Tigers, who ranks third among all outfielders with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, 59th among all players and fourth among AL batters.

Designated hitter

Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers, the First Team selection, has 5.5 Box-Toppers points, 15th among all designated hitters and 171st among all players. Ohtani earned 2.0 of his points as a pitcher. His 3.5 points as a designated hitter would rank 22nd among all players at that position.

Second Team selection is Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies, who is Box-Toppers’ choice for All-MLB team at designated hitter. Schwarber leads all designated hitters with 12.0 Box-Toppers points, 24th among all players and first among NL batters.

Starting pitchers

All five of Box-Toppers’ choices for All-MLB Team starting pitchers are named to the All-MLB Teams—three to the First Team and two to the Second Team.

Here are Box-Toppers’ choices for starting pitchers on the First Team:

  • Tarik Skubal of the Tigers, who leads all players with 22.1 Box-Toppers points.

  • Paul Skenes of the Pirates, whose 21.1 Box-Toppers points ranks second overall, first among NL pitchers.

  • Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox, whose 19.8 Box-Toppers points is fourth overall, second among AL pitchers.

Here are Box-Toppers’ choices for All-MLB starting pitchers on the Second Team:

  • Zack Wheeler of the Phillies, whose 20.1 Box-Toppers points is third overall, second among NL pitchers.

  • Bryan Woo of the Mariners, whose 18.0 Box-Toppers points is fifth overall, third among AL pitchers.

Here are the remaining First Team selections for starting pitchers:

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers, whose 13.0 Box-Toppers points is seventh overall, fourth among NL pitchers.

  • Max Fried of the Yankees, whose 14.4 Box-Toppers points is 13th overall, fifth among AL pitchers.

Here are the remaining Second Team selections for starting pitchers:

  • Cristopher Sánchez of the Phillies, whose 15.4 Box-Toppers points is 11th overall, seventh among NL pitchers.

  • Freddy Peralta of the Brewers, whose 14.7 Box-Toppers points is 12th overall, eighth among NL pitchers.

  • Hunter Brown of the Astros, whose 13.4 Box-Toppers points is 18th overall, ninth among AL pitchers.

All 10 All-MLB pitchers had more Box-Toppers points than the highest-ranked batter, Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies, whose 12.0 Box-Toppers points is 24th among all players.

Commentary: I’m a little (pleasantly) surprised at Zack Wheeler’s inclusion on the All-MLB Team. Despite his great performance this season, postseason awards voters have mostly ignored him because he was out the final month and a half of the season with a diagnosis of venous thoracic outlet syndrome. Wheeler led NL pitchers for 18 straight weeks and held the lead for more than a month after his season ended early due to injury. Skenes only passed Wheeler for the Box-Toppers points lead among NL pitchers in the final week of the season.

Relief pitchers

Aroldis Chapman of the Red Sox and Jhoan Duran of the Phillies are All-MLB First Team selections. Neither are among Box-Toppers’ All-MLB Team selections:

  • Chapman has 6.0 Box-Toppers points, 144th overall, seventh among all closing pitchers and fourth among AL closers.

  • Duran has 4.0 Box-Toppers points, 244th overall, 13th among all closing pitchers and sixth among NL closers.

Box-Toppers’ choices for All-MLB Team closing pitchers are:

  • Jeff Hoffman of the Blue Jays, who leads closers with 8.0 Box-Toppers points and ranks 73rd among all players.

  • Edwin Díaz of the Mets, whose 8.0 Box-Toppers points is second among all closing pitchers, first among NL closers and 75th among all players. (Though Hoffman and Díaz both have 8.0 points, Hoffman ranks ahead on a tiebreaker with more 2024 points—5.0 vs. 4.0.)

Díaz made the All-MLB Second Team along with Andres Muñoz of the Mariners, whose 3.0 Box-Toppers points is 20th among all closing pitchers, 13th among AL closers and 309th among all players.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day. (No Box-Toppers points are awarded in postseason games.)

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
