Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.

Glasnow struck out eight over 5 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings, walking one, in the 6-4 win over the Giants.

Glasnow would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Glasnow had the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Tuesday’s spring training Player of the Game winners. His 12.4 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Rays was 14th among AL pitchers.

This was also Glasnow’s second Player of the Game honor of the 2024 spring training season. He also did it March 1 (3IP 0H 0R BB 5K ND in the 6-4 win over the Guardians).

Glasnow also achieved the highest Box-Toppers game score among Player of the Game winners this spring. His +12.1 game score beat the previous high +11.0 game score of the spring recorded Monday by Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (5IP 2H 0R BB 9K W in the 3-0 win over the Twins). Game scores for pitchers have the possibility of increasing as they pitch more innings as spring progresses.

American League Player of the Day is Tigers pitcher Kenta Maeda.

American League Player of the Day

Tigers pitcher Kenta Maeda struck out seven over four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, in the 1-0 win over the Twins.

Maeda would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Maeda earned 11.1 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Twins, 17th among AL pitchers.

American League Batter of the Day is Jordan Westburg of the Orioles.

American League Batter of the Day

Jordan Westburg of the Orioles hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 12-8 win over the Rays.

Westburg would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Westburg played in 68 games in 2023 with the Orioles, but has yet to earn his first regular season Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

National League Batter of the Day

Victor Scott II of the Cardinals went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, in the 8-6 win over the Red Sox.

Scott would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Scott, 23, has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Notable

Zack Gelof of the Athletics earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Tuesday.

Gelof (HR 2-3 R 2BI in the 4-2 win over the Mariners) was also AL Batter of the Day Monday (HR 3-3 2R 2BI in the 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks).

Gelof earned 2.5 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 93rd among AL batters.

Tuesday’s games

In Tuesday’s 14 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were 11 Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.

In two of Tuesday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

One game ended in a tie (Diamondbacks vs. Padres) and so no Player of the Game honor was awarded.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Glasnow would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Maeda would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Westburg and Scott would have each earned 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
