Chicago Cubs maintain Box-Toppers team rankings lead; Athletics top AL teams

The Chicago Cubs maintain the lead in Box-Toppers weekly team rankings.

Meanwhile, the Oakland Athletics rise to lead American League teams and the Tampa Bay Rays are the week’s hottest team.

Here are Box-Toppers 2020 season team rankings, through the games of Thursday, Aug. 13. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from Aug. 7 to Aug. 13. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of Aug. 6.

Cubs players have accumulated 19.3 Box-Toppers points through the games of Aug. 13, picking up 4.7 points in the past week. They have baseball’s best winning percentage (.813). The Cubs have led Box-Toppers weekly team rankings each of the first three weeks of the 2020 season.

The Cubs are led by pitcher Yu Darvish with 4.7 Box-Toppers points, who ranks third among all players in 2020 Box-Toppers points, first among National League players. Top batter is Jason Heyward with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, first among NL batters. Seven different Cubs players have earned Box-Toppers points so far this season.

The Athletics lead AL teams with 16.9 Box-Toppers points, second overall. The Athletics earned 5.0 points in the past week, rising from third place overall last week, passing last week’s AL team leader, the Minnesota Twins, who fall to fifth place overall (14.7), third among AL teams. The Athletics have baseball’s second-best winning percentage (.684), highest in the AL.

The Athletics are led by pitcher Frankie Montas with 4.0 Box-Toppers points, fifth overall and third among AL pitchers. Top batter is Khris Davis with 1.5 Box-Toppers points. Eight different Athletics players have earned Box-Toppers points so far this season.

The Rays are the hottest team of the week, earning 8.9 Box-Toppers points between Aug. 7 and 13, a period in which they went 7-1. The Rays made the biggest jump in Box-Toppers team rankings in the previous week, going from 19th place last week, jumping 15 spots to fourth place this week with 14.9 Box-Toppers points. They now rank second among AL teams.

The St. Louis Cardinals rank 30th and last in Box-Toppers team rankings with 2.0 Box-Toppers points, earning no points in the past week. The Cardinals  have not played since July 29, missing 18 scheduled games (nearly a third of the scheduled season), after games were postponed due to players testing positive for COVID-19. The Cardinals are scheduled to resume play Saturday, Aug. 15.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
