Orioles pitcher Trey Gibson earned Box-Toppers Player of the Day honors as 2026 spring training games kicked off Friday.
Gibson struck out three over three scoreless, hitless innings to earn the save in a 2-0 win over the Yankees.
While the 23-year-old has appeared in 55 minor league games over five seasons, he has yet to make his Major League regular-season debut or earn Box-Toppers points.
National League Player of the Day
Jacob Amaya (Diamondbacks): Went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored in a 3-2 win over the Rockies. Despite 64 games of MLB experience since 2023, Amaya is still seeking his first regular-season Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor.
American League Batter of the Day
Salvador Perez (Royals): Homered and doubled (2-for-3) with two RBIs in a 7-3 win over the Rangers. Perez, who finished third among AL batters with 9.5 Box-Toppers points in 2025, was the only one of Friday’s five winners who has previously earned Box-Toppers points in the regular season.
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Jacob Amaya.
Friday’s Scoring Summary
No official Box-Toppers points are awarded for preseason exhibition games. Had this been the regular season, points would have been distributed as follows:
Trey Gibson (BAL): 2.0 points (Player of the Day)
Jacob Amaya (ARI): 1.7 points (NL Player of the Day)
Salvador Perez (KC): 1.5 points (AL Batter of the Day)
All other winners: 1.0 point
Of Friday's five games, four winners have 0.0 career regular-season Box-Toppers points, highlighting the "look at the future" nature of spring training.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day. (No Box-Toppers points are awarded in postseason games.)
