Rankings

Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes rises from fourth to third place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Skenes (7IP 3H 0R 0BB 7K W in the 4-0 win over the Rockies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 18.1 for the season. He passes Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta (17.7 points) and now trails Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (20.1 points) and Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (19.4 points).

Passing Pivetta, he rises to second among NL pitchers, trailing Wheeler by 2.0 points. While players can earn 2.0 points for each Player of the Day honor, it would take Skenes at least two starts to pass Wheeler because if both have 20.1 points, Wheeler would rank ahead based on having more 2024 points—21.4 vs. 13.0.

Wheeler, however, is out for the season, having been diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome. He will undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery and recovery time is expected to be six to eight months.

Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes rises to third place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
