Michael Toglia of the Rockies is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Monday’s spring training games.

Toglia homered and hit two doubles, going 4-for-4, scoring four times and driving in three runs, in the 12-8 win over the Brewers.

Toglia would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Toglia made his regular season Major League debut Aug. 30, 2022, has played in 31 games, but has yet to earn his first regular season Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Twins pitcher Joe Ryan is Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day in Monday’s spring training games.

American League Player of the Day—Twins pitcher Joe Ryan struck out four over 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 8-4 win over the Pirates.

Ryan would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Ryan earned 14.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 10th among AL pitchers and most among Monday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners. This was his second Player of the Game honor of 2023 spring training. He also did it March 22.

American League Batter of the Day—Eric Wagaman of the Yankees homered and went 2-for-2, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 8-4 win over the Rays.

Wagaman has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because the overall Player of the Day is NL batter Michael Toglia.

Notable—In Monday’s 12 spring training games between two Major League clubs, two ended in a tie in which no Player of the Game honor was awarded (see chart below for game details). In the remaining 10, four who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining six players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.

Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Toglia would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Ryan would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Wagaman would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
