Chicago White Sox regain lead in Box-Toppers team rankings, Padres lead NL teams

The Chicago White Sox, the week’s hottest team, regain the lead in this week’s Box-Toppers team rankings, passing last week’s leader, the New York Yankees.

Here are Box-Toppers 2021 team rankings, through the games of Thursday, June 3. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from May 28 to June 3. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of May 27.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres lead National League teams for the third week in a row.

White Sox players have accumulated 45.1 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 6.7 points in the past week, most of any team. The White Sox pass the Yankees, who fall to third with 42.4 Box-Toppers points, 2.0 points in the past week. The White Sox led all teams for three previous weeks before the Yankees displaced them last week and the White Sox fell to third place.

The White Sox have baseball’s third-best winning percentage (.607), behind the San Francisco Giants (.625) and Tampa Bay Rays (.621). The Giants are ninth in Box-Toppers team rankings with 37.0 points and the Rays are second with 44.5.

The White Sox are led by pitcher Lance Lynn with 7.7 Box-Toppers points, eighth among all players and third among American League pitchers. White Sox top batter is Jose Abreu with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, second among AL batters. There are 15 White Sox players who have earned Player of the Game honors so far this season.

The Padres maintain their lead this week among NL teams with 41.8 Box-Toppers points, picking up 4.0 in the past week, maintaining fourth place in overall team rankings, behind the White Sox (45.1), Rays (44.5) and Yankees (42.4). The Padres have the second-best winning percentage among NL teams (.603), behind the Giants (.625). The Padres trail the Giants by one game in the NL West division.

The Padres are led by pitcher Yu Darvish (7.7 Box-Toppers points), who ranks seventh overall and fifth among NL pitchers. Fernando Tatis Jr. leads Padres batters (3.5 points), fifth among NL batters. So far this season, 19 different Padres players have earned Box-Toppers points.

Three teams rose five spots in Box-Toppers team rankings this week, tied for the biggest jump in the standings:

  • The Giants rose from 14th to ninth place with 37.0 points, picking up 5.5 points in the past week.

  • The Seattle Mariners rose from 22nd to 17th with 31.5 points, picking up 5.5 points in the past week.

  • The Kansas City Royals rose from 23rd to 18th with 31.23 points, picking up 5.5 points in the past week.

Four teams fell five spots in Box-Toppers team rankings this week, tied for the biggest plummet in standings:

  • The Philadelphia Phillies fell from 10th to 15th place with 33.4 points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week.

  • The Miami Marlins fell from 11th to 16th with 32.2 points, picking up no points in the past week.

  • The Minnesota Twins fell from 17th to 22nd with 29.7 points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week. (The Twins were last week’s hottest team.)

  • The Atlanta Braves fell from 18th to 23rd with 29.0 points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week.

The Pittsburgh Pirates rank 30th and last place in team rankings for the second straight week with 20.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 3.0  points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
