New York Yankees rise to lead Box-Toppers weekly team rankings report

The New York Yankees rise to lead this week’s Box-Toppers team rankings report, passing the Chicago White Sox, who led for the past three weeks.

Here are Box-Toppers 2021 team rankings, through the games of Thursday, May 27. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from May 21 to May 27. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of May 20.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres lead National League teams for the second week in a row and the Minnesota Twins are the week’s hottest team.

Yankees players have accumulated 40.4 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 6.2 points in the past week. The Yankees pass last week’s top team, the White Sox, who fall to third overall with 38.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 3.0 points in the past week.

The Yankees have baseball’s sixth-best winning percentage (.580) and rank third in the American League East Division, two games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. The five teams with better winning percentages:

  • San Diego Padres (.627), fourth in Box-Toppers team rankings with 37.8 points.

  • Los Angeles Dodgers (.620), fifth in Box-Toppers team rankings with 37.7 points.

  • Tampa Bay Rays (.615), second in Box-Toppers team rankings with 39.8 points.

  • Boston Red Sox (.600), seventh in Box-Toppers team rankings with 34.2 points.

  • Chicago White Sox (.592), third in Box-Toppers team rankings with 38.4 points.

The Yankees are led by pitcher Gerrit Cole with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, who ranks second overall and second among American League pitchers. Giancarlo Stanton leads Yankees batters with 3.5 Box-Toppers points, seventh among AL batters. So far this season, 12 different Yankees players have earned Box-Toppers points.

The Padres maintain their lead this week among NL teams with 37.8 Box-Toppers points, picking up 5.5 in the past week, maintaining their fourth place in overall team rankings, behind the Yankees (40.4), Rays (39.8) and White Sox (38.4). The Padres have baseball’s best winning percentage (.627).

The Padres are led by pitcher Yu Darvish (7.7 Box-Toppers points), who ranks sixth overall and fourth among NL pitchers. Jake Cronenworth leads Padres batters (3.0 points), sixth among NL batters. So far this season, 17 different Padres players have earned Box-Toppers points.

The Minnesota Twins are the week’s hottest team, picking up 7.0 Box-Toppers points in the past week, most of any team, giving them 27.7 points on the season. Their eight-spot rise from 25th to 17th in team rankings is also the biggest jump among all teams this week.

The Arizona Diamondbacks had the biggest decline of the week, falling nine spots in team rankings from 17th last week to 26th this week with 23.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week, as the team lost all six games it played this week and has now lost 11 in a row.

The Pittsburgh Pirates fall into 30th and last place in team rankings with 17.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. They were ranked 29th last week. The Colorado Rockies, last week’s lowest-rated team, rise to 28th place with 21.4 points, picking up 4.0 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
