* Player who is also on Box-Toppers’ 2019 year-end All-Star team
† Player who is also on Box-Toppers’ 2018-19 All-Star team

The Box-Toppers All-Star teams for 2014-19 consist of the best players over the past six seasons, which includes seven of the 27 players who are also on Box-Toppers 2018-19 All-Star teams.

Also, among the 27 players on the teams, there are eight players who are on Box-Toppers 2019 All-Star teams and six who are on All-Star teams over all three time spans—for 2019, for 2018-19 and for 2014-19.

Leading the 2014-19 All-Stars is Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer, who ranks first in Box-Toppers points over that six-season period with 134.3. Scherzer ranks third among players over 2018-19 (40.5) and was 15th among all players in 2019 (15.4).

The Houston Astros have four players on the 2014-19 All-Star team, most of any club:

The All-Star teams are composed of the players with the highest Box-Toppers point total by position in each league over the 2014-19 time period. In addition to the batters—eight in the National League and nine (including the designated hitter) in the American League—are the top four starting pitchers in each league and the top closing pitcher.

This six-year view of All-Stars, as opposed to the single-season (2019) or two-season (2018-19) view, provides an indication of established players who have been able to maintain superiority over a sustained period.

Scherzer, who leads all players over 2014-19, has been among the top 10 pitchers in his league in each of the past six seasons. He ranked second in the AL in 2014 with the Tigers (22.1 points) and was among the top 10 NL pitchers each year from 2015-19, including leading NL pitchers three straight years (2016—25.7 points, 2017—25.0 points and 2018—25.1 points). Scherzer fell to ninth among NL pitchers in 2019 with 15.4 points, which was 15th overall.

Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale leads AL players in Box-Toppers points over the past six seasons with 105.8, third among all players over that span, behind Scherzer and Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (125.4). Sale ranked among the top 10 AL pitchers from 2014-18, including leading all players in 2017 with 25.1 Box-Toppers points. But in 2019, Sale ranked 15th among AL pitchers with 11.0 points. As a result of his comparatively down year in 2019, he did not appear on Box-Toppers’ 2019 or 2018-19 All-Star teams. He ranked seventh among AL pitchers over 2018-19 (31.1 points).

Mike Trout of the Angels leads AL batters in Box-Toppers points over the past six seasons, earning 54.7 from 2014-19, 26th among all players. Trout, who is also on Box-Toppers’ 2019 and 2018-19 All-Star teams, ranked among the top 10 AL batters in five of the six past seasons, missing only 2017, when he had 5.0 points, 45th among AL batters. Although Trout leads AL batters in total Box-Toppers points over the past six seasons, he did not lead AL batters in any season, finishing as high as second in 2015 (12.0 points, behind Adrian Beltre of the Rangers with 21.5) and 2016 (12.5 points, behind Manny Machado of the Orioles with 12.7).

Leading NL batters among the 2014-19 All-Stars is Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs, who has 49.0 Box-Toppers points in the six-season period, 35th among all players. Rizzo has been among the top 10 NL batters in three of the past six seasons, including leading all NL batters in 2017 with 15.5 Box-Toppers points.

The highest ranked player for 2013-18 who is not among the All-Stars is Carlos Carrasco of the Indians, who ranks ninth among all players over the past six seasons with 89.7 Box-Toppers points.
