Padres' Tyson Ross tops players in Saturday, March 28's spring games

Padres pitcher Tyson Ross, who struck out 12 batters over six innings, is Saturday’s spring training Player of the Day.

Ross also allowed six hits, two runs and two walks in the 3-2 win over the Rangers.

Athletics pitcher Scott Kazmir is American League Player of the Day for Saturday’s spring training games. Kazmir pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in the 10-4 win over the White Sox. He did not pick up the win because the White Sox took the lead after his exit.

Todd Frazier of the Reds is National League Batter of the Day. Frazier homered, drove in four runs and scored twice in the 9-5 win over the Cubs.

Alex Liddi of the Royals is AL Batter of the Day. Liddi doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs in the 10-5 win over the Diamondbacks.

Box-Toppers points aren’t awarded for spring training games, but if this were the regular season, Ross would earn 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Kazmir would earn 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day. Frazier and Liddi would each earn 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being top batter in their league for the day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have received 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

One spring training game Saturday ended in a tie (Astros and Marlins) and the Giants played a split-squad game with its prospects. Box-Toppers Players of the Game were not named for either of those two games.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Wainwright is Wednesday's National League Batter of the Day, earning 1.5 Box-Toppers points, giving him 19.2 for the season. He passes previous Box-Toppers leader, Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez (19.0), who had led since Sept. 6. Wainwright went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs in the 4-3 win over the Rockies. He is the sixth pitcher this season to earn Player of the Game honors for batting.

Meanwhile, Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma is Wednesday's Player of the Day. Iwakuma pitched eight scoreless innings in the 8-0 win over the Tigers. Iwakuma earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 14.4 for the season, putting him in 17th place in player rankings.

Padres pitcher Tyson Ross is National League Player of the Day. Ross struck out seven over seven innings in the 3-2 win over the Pirates. Ross picked up a no-decision because he exited with the Padres trailing, but the team came back to take the lead in the top of the ninth.
