Phillies lead Box-Toppers team rankings for 15th week; Orioles regain AL lead

The Philadelphia Phillies lead Box-Toppers team rankings for the 15th straight week.

Here are Box-Toppers 2024 final team rankings through games of Thursday, Aug. 8. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from Aug. 2 to August. 8. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of Aug. 1.

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles rise past the New York Yankees to lead American League teams and the San Francisco Giants are the week’s hottest team.

Phillies lead

Phillies players have accumulated 94.5 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 6.0 points in the past week. The Phillies lead over the second-place Orioles (87.1 points) by 7.4 points. The Phillies also lead National League teams ahead of the second-place San Diego Padres (85.0 points).

The Phillies have baseball’s best winning percentage (.600) and are led by pitcher Zack Wheeler (15.7 points, third overall and second among NL pitchers). Phillies top batter is Bryce Harper (7.7 points, third among NL batters). Twenty-one different Phillies players have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2024.

Orioles lead AL teams

The Baltimore Orioles rise to lead American League teams, passing the New York Yankees, who led last week.

Orioles players have accumulated 87.1 Box-Toppers points in 2024, picking up 6.5 in the past week, and rank second overall. They lead AL teams ahead of the second-place Kansas City Royals (85.7 points). The Yankees fall to third among AL teams, fourth overall, with 85.3 points, picking up 3.0 points in the past week.

The Orioles are tied with the Yankees for the second-highest winning percentage among AL teams (.586). They both trail the Cleveland Guardians (.588), who rank 10th in Box-Toppers rankings with 78.6 points, picking up no points in the past week.

The Orioles are led by pitcher Corbin Burnes (8.7 points, 38th overall and 19th among AL pitchers). Orioles top batter is Ryan Mountcastle (7.0 points, fifth among AL batters). Thirty different Orioles players have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2024.

The Orioles rose from fifth to second place this week. That three-spot rise is tied for the biggest jump in rankings among all teams. The Arizona Diamondbacks also rose three spots from 14th to 11th place with 76.8 points, picking up 6.0 in the past week.

Hottest team: Giants

The San Francisco Giants are the hottest team in the past week, picking up 8.7 points in the past week, most among all teams, rising from 18th to 17th place in team rankings with 70.3 points.

The Giants picked up 6.0 points by winning five of their seven games this week. They picked up the other 2.7 points by signing relief pitcher Spencer Howard. He earned 2.7 points earlier this season with the Giants before being traded to the Guardians. The Giants signed him Thursday after the Guardians cut him loose.

Biggest fall: Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers fell five spots in team rankings in the past week, from second to seventh with 84.7 points, with a net gain of 1.5 points in the past week. The Dodgers won three games this week, picking up 3.0 points, but released Cavan Biggio, who had 1.5 points this season (which he earned while he was with the Blue Jays).

Net loss: Pirates

One team had a net loss in Box-Toppers points this week—the Pittsburgh Pirates were down 1.5 points to 66.2 points, falling from 17th to 19th place overall. The Pirates won one game this week, picking up 1.0 Box-Toppers point, but designated outfielder Edward Olivares for assignment, who had earned 2.5 points with the Pirates in 2024.

Last place: White Sox

The Chicago White Sox remain in 30th and last place for the 10th week with 24.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 points in the past week.

The White Sox ended their 21-game losing streak, winning one game this week, but subsequently fired manager Pedro Grifol.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
