Phillies lead Box-Toppers team rankings for 17th week; Yankees regain AL team lead

The Philadelphia Phillies lead Box-Toppers team rankings for the 17th straight week.

Here are Box-Toppers 2024 final team rankings through games of Thursday, Aug. 22. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from Aug. 16 to August. 22. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of Aug. 15.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees regain the lead among American League teams and the New York Mets are the week’s hottest team.

Phillies lead

Phillies players have accumulated 99.5 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 3.0 points in the past week. The Phillies lead over the second-place Yankees (96.3 points) by 3.2 points. The Phillies lead National League teams ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers have 96.1 points, picking up 6.4 in the past week, rising from fifth to third place overall.

The Phillies have baseball’s third-best winning percentage (.583), behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (.594) and New York Yankees (.586). The Dodgers are seventh in Box-Toppers rankings with 89.7 points and the Yankees are second with 96.3.

The Phillies are led by pitcher Zack Wheeler (16.7 points, third overall and second among NL pitchers). Phillies top batter is Bryce Harper (7.7 points, third among NL batters). Twenty-one different Phillies players have earned Box-Toppers points in 2024.

Yankees lead AL teams

The New York Yankees pass the Baltimore Orioles, regaining the lead among AL teams.

The Yankees have 96.3 Box-Toppers points, picking up 5.5 in the past week, rising from fourth to second place overall. They lead AL teams ahead of the second-place Kansas City Royals (94.9 points, picking up 5.7 in the past week, rising from sixth to fourth overall). The Orioles fall to third place among AL teams and fall from third to sixth place overall with 93.8 points, picking up 2.7 points in the past week.

The Yankees have baseball’s second-highest winning percentage (.586) behind the Dodgers (.594).

The Yankees are led by pitcher Luis Gil (15.4 points, fifth overall and second among AL pitchers). Yankees top batter is Aaron Judge (12.0 points, 10th overall and first among AL batters). Twenty-four different Yankees players have earned Box-Toppers points in 2024.

Hottest team: Mets

The New York Mets are the hottest team in the past week, picking up 7.2 points in the past week, most among all teams, rising from 12th to eighth place in team rankings with 89.2 points. The Mets’ four-spot rise is also the biggest jump in rankings this week among all teams.

The Mets won five of their seven games this week.

Biggest fall: Padres, Orioles and Guardians

Three teams each fell three spots in Box-Toppers team rankings this week, tied for the biggest fall:

  • The San Diego Padres fell from second to fifth place with 94.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 3.0 in the past week.

  • The Baltimore Orioles fell from third to sixth place with 93.8 points, picking up 2.7 in the past week.

  • The Cleveland Guardians fell from 10th to 13th place with 84.6 points, picking up 1.0 in the past week.

Notable: Dodgers

Despite a successful week on the field, the Los Angeles Dodgers held steady in rankings after losing Box-Toppers point value through player transactions.

The Dodgers won five of their six games this week, with players picking up 7.0 Box-Toppers points in the process, but the team lost 4.5 points in two player transactions:

  • Outfielder Jason Heyward (3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024) was designated for assignment.

  • Shortstop Nick Ahmed (1.5 points) was designated for assignment and became a free agent.

The Dodgers had a net gain of 2.5 points this week, holding steady in seventh place overall with 89.7 points for the season.

Last place: White Sox

The Chicago White Sox remain in 30th and last place for the 12th week with 27.9 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
